Roof & mounting
Can I ballast solar on a concrete flat roof in South Africa?
Often yes — ballasted or hybrid-ballasted racks are common on concrete flat roofs when the structure can take the extra dead load and wind uplift is engineered for your metro’s wind zone. Waterproofing warranties and parapet edge zones decide the detail. Do not DIY paving-slab “ballast” without a design.

Answer first: Ask for a structural note (load) and a wind-uplift calculation, plus a waterproofing method that the roof-membrane warrantor accepts. Penetrating posts, non-penetrating ballast, or a hybrid both appear in SA quotes — pick from engineering, not Facebook — roof suitability · roof warranty · read a quote.
Ballast vs penetrations
| Approach | Watch-outs |
|---|---|
| Non-penetrating ballast | Dead load, wind zone, edge exclusions, walkway access |
| Penetrating posts / kerbs | Membrane detailing, leak liability split |
| Hybrid | Fewer penetrations + verified ballast mass |
Coastal and Highveld notes
- Coastal wind uplift and corrosion classes matter for frames and fasteners.
- Highveld hail and UV still hit flat arrays — walkways help cleaning — hail / insurance · cleaning.
- Dust soiling on low-tilt flats can be worse than steep pitches.
Quote checklist
- Design wind region and safety factors stated.
- Ballast kg per bay on a drawing, not a verbal “enough slabs.”
- Membrane product and who warrants penetrations.
- Cable management that does not saw through waterproofing.
- Access paths for cleaning and firefighters.
When ground or carport wins
If the slab is already cracked, the membrane is failing, or the body corporate forbids roof plant, price ground-mount or carport against a roof rebuild. Related: sectional title · roof space · insurance.
Homeowner folder to keep with the CoC
Store quote annexures, OEM manuals, serial photos, export-limit screenshots and metro reference letters together. When a future technician or buyer inherits the plant, that folder beats scattered WhatsApps — choose installer · selling with solar · warranty transfer.
Re-check fixed charges and tariff codes after any meter change so savings models stay honest — fixed charges · 2026/27 tariffs · metro tariffs hub · bill still high.
Field notes from SA handovers
At commissioning, ask the partner to demonstrate the behaviour on this page, photograph settings, and confirm NRS-listed SKUs match the invoice. Refuse non-listed gear and export promises that ignore your metro’s live PDF — red flags · NRS list · SSEG · read a quote.

Worked homeowner checklist
- Photograph board labels, nameplates and meter face before the site visit ends.
- Save the live metro or OEM PDF that backs any rand or rule cited on the quote.
- Book a Stage simulation (island test) where backup behaviour matters.
- Diary a 30-day monitoring review against the first bill after commissioning.
If numbers diverge, revisit self-use loads and fixed charges before accusing the array — monitoring · monthly savings · export vs self-use.
Edge zones and walkways
Wind codes and OEM racking manuals exclude ballast near parapets and corners unless special frames are used. Leave firefighter and cleaning walkways on the drawing; jammed rows that cannot be serviced become soiling traps — cleaning · bird-proofing.
Waterproofing warranty letter
Before deposit, get the membrane installer or warrantor to accept the racking method in writing. “We’ll silicone it later” is how leak disputes start between roofer and solar partner — roof warranty · inspection fails.
Tilt, soiling and winter Highveld
Low-tilt flats shed dust and bird mess poorly in dry months. Budget cleaning access and compare yield to a slightly steeper frame even if it needs more ballast — winter production · tilt · monitoring.
Structural red flags
- Ponding water that never drains.
- Existing cracks under proposed bay lines.
- Unknown screed thickness over insulation.
- Previous DIY slabs already stressing the deck.
Any of those pause the solar quote until a structural opinion lands — roof suitability · red flags.
Body corporate packs
Include load figures, wind region, membrane letters and a photo plan of walkways. Trustees approve clear engineering faster than lifestyle brochures — sectional title · read a quote.
Questions to put on every installer WhatsApp
- Which primary PDF or metro page backs the claim you just made?
- Who registers warranties and by which calendar deadline?
- What happens to export and backup if the first SSEG pack is rejected?
- Can you show a recent CoC and labelled board photo from a similar job?
Those four questions surface more truth than a glossy kWp number — choose installer · red flags · CoC · SSEG.
Bill hygiene after commissioning
Keep three months of pre-solar bills and three months after. Annotate tariff changes, guests, pool season and EV km. Without that diary, “solar did nothing” debates go nowhere — monthly savings · bill still high · read a bill · fixed charges.
Lightning and SPD on flat roofs
Exposed rooftop frames need the same SPD and bonding discipline as pitched arrays — sometimes more, because cable runs across the slab are longer. Coordinate with the earthing plan on the single-line — SPD · earthing · DC isolation.
Worked quote comparison (illustrative)
Partner A: penetrating posts, membrane patches by the original waterproofing contractor, R-figure included. Partner B: “ballast with paving slabs,” no wind calcs, no warrantor letter. Partner B is not cheaper — it is unfinished risk. Ask both for kg/bay, wind region, edge exclusions and a cleaning walkway width on plan. Only then compare Incl. VAT totals — read a quote · check a quote · red flags.
If the slab cannot take ballast mass, stop. A lighter penetrating system with proper detailing, or a carport in the yard, beats a cracked deck — carport · ground-mount · roof space.
Maintenance calendar on flats
Schedule a visual after the first big wind and after hail season. Check ballast positions have not crept, drains are not blocked by leaves under frames, and MC4s are not sitting in puddles — MC4 · hail · yearly maintenance · cleaning.
Flat roofs also tempt storage boxes around inverters. Keep OEM clearances sacred — heat and blocked vents shorten electronics life — ventilation · placement.
Commissioning photo habit
Before the scaffolding leaves, photograph serials, board labels, clamp rows, isolator positions, app settings and the meter face. Store them with the CoC. Future claims, resale and fault-finding all go faster with that pack — CoC · selling with solar · warranty transfer · battery claims.
Tariff July reminder
Every municipal July (and Eskom’s own updates) can move your payback napkin. Rebuild savings with the live tariff code, fixed charges and a realistic self-use fraction — not last year’s PDF — 2026/27 tariffs · fixed charges · metro tariffs · monthly savings.
Wind uplift vs waterproofing trade-off
Ballast that saves penetrations still needs a signed structural note for Cape / coastal wind and Highveld thunderstorms. Ask who owns membrane cuts if the design later adds anchors — roof suitability · roof warranty · hail / insurance.
Walkway and service access
Leave clear paths to AC units, water tanks and parapet drains. Arrays that block every path create angry body corporates and unpaid call-outs — sectional title · cleaning.
Quote annexure lines
- Ballast kg/m² and block type.
- Friction mat / protection fleece brand.
- Edge zones and wind region assumed.
- Who signs the structural letter.

Ballast mounts need a structural sign-off
Concrete flat roofs take ballast or chemically anchored rails — not timber blocks and hope. Demand a structural note for uplift in Cape / Highveld wind zones and a waterproofing detail that the roof warranty accepts. Ballast weight must sit inside the slab’s capacity; guessing from a product brochure fails inspection and insurance.
Photograph every penetration and ballast layout before handover. A leak under an undocumented mount becomes your problem the first wet winter.
Put this topic’s operating rule on the plant-room card in one sentence. The next Stage 4 night is the wrong time to rediscover tribal knowledge.
Quick questions
Can I just use paving slabs?
Not as a DIY substitute for an engineered ballast plan — uplift and point loads matter.
Will ballast void waterproofing?
It can if the warrantor is ignored — get written acceptance of the method.
Is flat-roof tilt always low?
Often 5–15° in frames; yield and soiling trade off — ask for the tilt on the drawing.
