How to claim a solar battery warranty in South Africa
Most SA lithium warranties run through the installer or authorised distributor, not a retail returns desk. Register the pack when the brand requires it (Freedom Won LiTE 2: within 60 days of purchase), keep serials, CoC and commissioning proof, and open the claim in writing within the brand’s notice window (Solar MD’s standalone statement uses 10 business days from discovery via the distributor path).

Answer first: A warranty is a process, not a WhatsApp complaint. Log the fault with the party named in your warranty sheet (installer → distributor → OEM), attach proof of purchase, serial number, commissioning evidence and a clear symptom log, and do not break tamper seals or open the pack yourself. Throughput (MWh) or cycle limits can end a claim even when calendar years remain.
What “warranty” usually means on SA home batteries
- Performance / capacity — pack retains at least a stated % of nominal capacity (often 60–70%) for the shorter of X years or Y MWh / cycles.
- Defects — materials and workmanship for a stated period (sometimes shorter than the performance term).
- Registration conditions — some brands void cover if you miss the registration window.
Solar MD’s South African consumer messaging on this desk cites 12 years / 84 MWh to ≥60% on the SS4160 class (verify the live SA warranty PDF for your serial). Freedom Won LiTE documents emphasise qualified installation, unpaid-invoice exclusions, and tamper seals. Hubble routes claims through its service centre after reseller intake. Always open the PDF that matches your exact model and region.
Step-by-step claim path
- Capture evidence now. Photos of the label/serial, inverter fault codes, app screenshots of SoC/voltage, and dates of the first symptom.
- Check registration. Freedom Won LiTE 2 / Encore registration guides require registration within 60 days of purchase — if you never registered, fix that before arguing capacity fade.
- Notify in writing inside the notice window. Solar MD’s worldwide-ex-SA standalone statement (useful as a process template; use the SA sheet for SA packs) requires written notice to the distributor path within 10 business days of discovery. Your SA sheet may mirror this — follow the email addresses printed there (support@solarmd.co.za appears on Solar MD statements as the marked channel).
- Use the installer first. Most residential warranties are enforced via the installing company or authorised reseller. Hubble’s published process has the reseller coordinate with the service centre; site visits may be requested.
- Provide the document pack: invoice, CoC, commissioning / PV GreenCard references, single-line diagram, proof the inverter/BMS pairing is approved, and remote-access credentials if the OEM asks.
- Allow remote diagnostics. Freedom Won’s LiTE guarantee text allows the company to require remote internet access to run a performance test. Blocking telemetry can stall a claim.
- Repair, replace or deny. Outcomes vary: module swap, full pack replacement, or denial for abuse, wrong settings, water ingress, or missing registration.
Common denial reasons (avoid these)
- Broken tamper seals or DIY cell work (Freedom Won is explicit).
- Installed outside manufacturer parameters or with incompatible inverters.
- Not paid in full within stated periods.
- Missed registration deadlines.
- Capacity measured with a random clamp meter instead of the OEM’s test method.
- Parallel-import packs with no SA distributor obligation.
Document pack checklist
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Serial + invoice | Starts the warranty clock; proves authorised channel |
| CoC + commissioning | Shows qualified installation |
| Inverter model / firmware | Compatibility and settings disputes |
| App / portal logs | Cycle count, temps, fault history |
| Photos of install environment | Heat, water, dust, clearances |
While you wait — keep the lights on
Ask whether a swap pool unit is available. Do not bypass the BMS. If the pack is offline, reassess essentials loads — essentials, Stage 6 sizing. Insurance may respond for sudden damage; warranties cover defects/performance — different lanes.
Brand process snapshots (verify live PDFs)
- Solar MD: written notice via distributor path; performance and defects schedules; SA warranty statement is the one that counts for SA customers.
- Freedom Won: register LiTE 2 within 60 days; support@freedomwon.co.za case logging on inverter docs; LiTE guarantee covers travel rules and excludes tampering.
- Hubble: reseller → service centre assessment; possible site visit; repair/replace when validated.

SA caveats
Warranty PDFs revise. This page is educational process guidance — not a claim lodged on your behalf and not legal advice. If the installer has disappeared, go to the authorised distributor with proof of purchase; grey Facebook specials are the hardest claims to win.
Throughput maths before you shout “fault”
A pack warranted for 12 years or 84 MWh (Solar MD SS4160-class SA statement cited on this desk) can exhaust the energy budget early in a home that cycles deeply every Stage evening. Ask the installer for the BMS cycle/throughput readout before opening a capacity claim. Measure capacity the way the warranty PDF specifies — random inverter SoC guesses are usually rejected.
If the installer has vanished
Take the invoice, serial and CoC to the authorised South African distributor or brand support desk. Grey-import Facebook packs with no distributor invoice are the claims that die first. Keep wholesaler delivery notes if your installer bought through Herholdt’s, ARB, Voltex, ACDC, DBS or similar — they help prove channel.
Insurance versus warranty
Lightning, flood, theft and vehicle impact are usually insurance events. Gradual capacity fade and manufacturing defects are warranty events. Opening both files with the same photo pack is fine; do not tell the insurer the OEM already declined if that is not true. Endorsement that names the battery helps both conversations — warranties overview.
Timeline that usually works
- Stop cycling the suspect module if the OEM says so; isolate safely.
- Open a ticket with the SA intermediary / installer the same week — not after six months of WhatsApp groups.
- Upload serials, commissioning certificate, photos and BMS exports in one pack.
- Ask for a written RMA or site-inspection date; diary every chase.
- Keep the rest of the system running on remaining packs only if the BMS topology allows it.
Parallel packs that share a bus can take siblings offline when one module faults — confirm the topology before you promise the household “the other batteries will cover Stage 4.”
Insurance vs OEM warranty
Sudden swelling, fire or water ingress may sit with the household insurer; gradual capacity fade usually sits with the OEM warranty. Notify both early if the cause is unclear; let them fight subrogation later. Related: solar insurance · swelling questions.
Quick questions
Who do I email first — OEM or installer?
Start with the installer or authorised reseller named on your invoice; OEMs usually expect that path.
Can I open the battery to check cells?
No. Tamper seals void many warranties (Freedom Won is explicit).
Does a 10-year sticker mean 10 years no matter what?
No. Throughput/cycle caps and registration conditions can end cover earlier.

Parallel systems and claim friction
When two or three modules share a bus, OEMs often want proof that ages, firmware and cable lengths match their parallel rules. A claim that mixes a new module with a three-year-old sibling without logging the expansion date is a common rejection. Write the expansion into the handover folder the day it happens.
City Lodge / public DC price nights and wholesaler invoices help prove purchase channel; keep them with the CoC. Do not rely on informal WhatsApp “it was under warranty” notes — parallel expansion · cycles · insurance.
