System sizing

How much does winter cut solar production in South Africa?

Many SA homes see roughly 30–50% less monthly PV kWh in mid-winter than in mid-summer, with bigger swings on misty coasts and Highveld storm seasons that also cut summer. Winter sun sits lower, days are shorter, and morning geysers compete for fewer sunny hours — so self-use design and battery timing matter more than a summer-only payback slide.

Answer first: Size and finance on an annual file that includes June/July, not on a January production screenshot. A system that “covers the bill” in December can leave a nasty prepaid balance in July unless you shift loads, accept grid import, or store midday winter sun carefully.

Why winter kWh falls

  • Shorter days and lower sun angle reduce peak irradiance hours.
  • More shading from neighbouring roofs and trees as the sun tracks lower.
  • Coastal cloud / mist patterns (especially Cape) that linger into late morning.
  • Higher simultaneous morning demand (geysers, heaters, earlier kitchens).

Tilt and orientation tweaks help at the margin; they do not invent June sun. Related: orientation & tilt · cloudy days.

Highveld (Johannesburg / Pretoria)Often ~35–45% lower mid-winter; summer storms also clip peaksBattery for evening; avoid summer-only quotes

These are planning bands for conversation with an installer, not guarantees. Ask for month-by-month kWh in the proposal PDF.

Load shedding and winter evenings

Winter Stage slots after sunset hit when PV is already offline. Usable battery kWh sized only on summer evenings will feel short when the heat pump or oil heater joins the essentials board. Re-run Stage 4 / Stage 6 sketches with winter loads — Stage 4 battery · aircon on battery (same surge logic for heaters).

Tariff and payback honesty

July municipal annexures often arrive with winter bills. Fixed charges do not shrink when panels produce less. A payback that assumed flat monthly savings needs a winter haircut — monthly savings · payback · metro tariffs.

Owner checklist

  1. Demand a 12-month production table, not a single “average day.”
  2. Mark June/July self-use vs export separately.
  3. List winter essentials (heating, longer lights) on the backup board.
  4. Clean panels after dusty winds — winter performance also tracks soiling — cleaning.

Worked July bill sketch (illustrative)

A home that self-uses 450 kWh of PV in January might only self-use 250–300 kWh in July while import rises for heating and longer lights. If fixed charges are R400–R700 and winter import sits on a high block, the “solar saved me R2 500 every month” WhatsApp claim collapses for a third of the year. Build the savings sheet with at least summer, shoulder and winter rows — monthly savings · fixed charges.

Finance deposits do not shrink in July. An energy-loan debit sized on summer surplus is how cash-flow goes negative in mid-winter — bond / energy finance.

Battery behaviour in the cold months

LiFePO₄ still works in SA winters, but usable capacity and charge rate can feel tighter in unheated garages on cold Highveld mornings. Keep the install within the manufacturer’s ambient range; do not put the pack against an uninsulated south wall and then blame “winter solar.” Grid-charge policies should favour cheaper daytime imports or PV, not expensive evening TOU panic fills — indoor vs outdoor · grid-charge · DoD.

Geyser, heat pump and pool in winter

Morning geyser elements compete for scarce sunny hours. Heat pumps often win on Cape winters; solar geysers need honest freeze and drip-tray planning inland. Pool pumps can shift to the brightest window — or sleep in winter — heat pump vs geyser · pool pump · geyser on backup.

Maintenance that shows up as “bad winter panels”

Dust after dry winds, bird mess under roost lines, and leaves in autumn can look like seasonal loss. A safe clean before June is cheaper than another 2 kWp — cleaning & maintenance. Check app production against clear-day expectations; a sudden step-down is often a string fault, not the solstice — fault codes.

What to demand on the proposal PDF

  • Month-by-month kWh for your lat/long and azimuths.
  • Separate self-use vs export assumptions for June–August.
  • Essentials runtime at winter evening loads.
  • Clarity on whether heat pumps / EV charging were included in the load file.

Refuse a summer-only production screenshot as “the numbers.” Re-open the sheet after each July tariff annexure — metro tariffs · tariffs 2026.

Holiday homes that sit empty in mid-winter should model export or a deeper SoC idle policy differently from primary residences — holiday home solar.

Panel cleaning and inverter clip in dull weeks

Inverters that clip hard at summer noon may never clip in July — so a “bigger inverter later” plan should not assume winter pain equals summer clipping. Conversely, undersized PV that felt fine in December becomes a prepaid shock in June. Keep the conversation on monthly energy, not peak kW badges — inverter size · how many panels.

Export credits in winter are usually a sideshow

Dull months produce fewer exportable kWh just when you also import more. Net-billing credits at well below retail cannot rescue a design that ignored June. Prioritise moving dishwashers, laundry and EV charging into the brightest winter window before you chase another string for “export income.”

Homeflex / TOU customers should re-check whether winter peak periods still align with their charge-from-grid habits — expensive evening fills to “top up for shedding” are a classic savings leak — Cape Town TOU · Homeflex · export vs self-use.

If you are on prepaid, winter token anxiety is normal after commissioning; track weekly spend for two months before judging the system — prepaid + solar · token tips.

Where this sits on the desk

Read beside orientation & tilt, cloudy days, Stage 4 battery, monthly savings, and payback. When an installer shows only a December screenshot, ask for June before you sign.

Generator overlap in deep winter stages

Some households keep a small generator for rare multi-day winter Stage runs instead of doubling battery kWh for a few nights a year. That can be rational if fuel logistics and ATS wiring are documented on the same CoC as the hybrid — generator vs hybrid · ATS. Do not pretend the generator is free; count petrol and maintenance in the winter ledger beside prepaid tokens.

Quick questions

Can I size panels for winter only?

You can, but you will overbuild for summer and may hit export limits. Better: size for annual self-use and be honest about winter grid import.

Do steeper tilts fix winter?

They can lift winter capture slightly at the cost of summer noon. Ask for both tilts modelled; do not chase a forum angle.

Does snow matter in SA?

Rarely for most metros. High-altitude frost and hail matter more than snow load folklore.

Winter Stage overlap planning

June–August shorter days coincide with evening Stage windows for many metros. Size battery for essentials through the dark peak, not for summer midday surplus. East-west roofs that looked “fine” in January may need a honest winter shade revisit.
