Roof & mounting
Can I put solar panels on an asbestos roof in South Africa?
Usually you should not rail directly into friable asbestos / old fibre-cement sheets — reputable partners push removal, over-cladding or a ground / carport array instead. Disturbing asbestos is a health and legal problem; insurers and CoC signatories are wary. Price a safe roof plan before you price panels.

Answer first: Get a roof identification (asbestos vs modern fibre-cement vs metal). If it is asbestos-containing and friable, stop DIY thoughts. Ask for written options: licensed removal + new sheeting, engineered over-clad, or ground-mount / carport. Pair with roof suitability · insurance · CoC.
Why installers walk away from “just clamp it”
- Cutting or drilling can release fibres.
- Sheet strength may not carry live loads safely.
- Insurance questionnaires ask about asbestos.
- Future buyers and assessors flag it.
Option comparison (illustrative)
| Path | When it shows up |
|---|---|
| Licensed removal + new IBR/tile | Long-term home; roof already due |
| Engineered over-clad | Where a specialist designs a cover system |
| Carport / ground array | Yard space; keep old roof untouched |
| Decline solar on that plane | No budget for safe works — wait |
Quote hygiene
Refuse a line item that only says “mounting” on a suspected asbestos roof without a method statement. Ask who holds the asbestos disposal certificates if removal is chosen — read a quote · red flags · roof warranty.
Alternatives that still cut the bill
East-west carports, ground mounts and neighbouring metal lean-tos often beat a heroic asbestos drill-out. Yield maths still needs shade and cable runs priced — east-west · shade · cable sizing.
Health boundary
This desk does not give asbestos abatement advice. Use licensed contractors and the current SA regulatory path for identification and disposal. Solar is optional; lung safety is not.

Homeowner folder to keep with the CoC
Store quote annexures, OEM manuals, serial photos, export-limit screenshots and metro reference letters together. When a future technician or buyer inherits the plant, that folder beats scattered WhatsApps — choose installer · selling with solar · warranty transfer.
Re-check fixed charges and tariff codes after any meter change so savings models stay honest — fixed charges · 2026/27 tariffs · metro tariffs hub · bill still high.
Field notes from SA handovers
At commissioning, ask the partner to demonstrate the behaviour on this page, photograph settings, and confirm NRS-listed SKUs match the invoice. Refuse non-listed gear and export promises that ignore your metro’s live PDF — red flags · NRS list · SSEG · read a quote.
Where this sits on the desk
Cross-check related cards on Answers, tariff context on metro tariffs, and hardware on batteries / panels & inverters. Use check a quote before any deposit.
Worked homeowner checklist
- Photograph board labels, nameplates and meter face before the site visit ends.
- Save the live metro or OEM PDF that backs any rand or rule cited on the quote.
- Book a Stage simulation (island test) where backup behaviour matters.
- Diary a 30-day monitoring review against the first bill after commissioning.
If numbers diverge, revisit self-use loads and fixed charges before accusing the array — monitoring · monthly savings · export vs self-use.
How to brief surveyors and insurers
Write “suspected asbestos / fibre-cement — no penetrations pending ID” on the enquiry pack. Ask the insurer whether a ground or carport array is treated differently from a roof array for premium and claims — insurance · insurance claims · hail.
Cost stack homeowners underestimate
| Line | Why it appears |
|---|---|
| Asbestos ID / air monitoring | Regulatory path before disturbance |
| Licensed removal + disposal certificates | Not a handyman skip-bin job |
| New sheeting + flashings | Fresh plane for clamps |
| Temporary weather protection | Rain during strip weeks |
| Re-roof vs carport delta | Sometimes carport wins on calendar |
Put those lines on the solar quote or a linked roofing quote so the deposit is honest — read a quote.
Sectional title and estates
Trustees may forbid roof works on asbestos common property even if your exclusive-use garage looks tempting. Start with the body-corporate rules and a trustee letter before scaffolding — sectional title · estate / HOA.
Resale disclosure
Buyers’ attorneys increasingly ask about roof material and solar penetrations. A clean ground-mount with certificates can be easier to explain than a heroic clamp job on ageing sheets — selling with solar · warranty transfer · property value.
Interim bill cuts without touching asbestos
While you plan the roof, you can still chase geyser timers, pool schedules, LED and tariff class changes — and a temporary generator/hybrid hire is sometimes cheaper than a rushed unsafe array — smart geyser · 2026/27 tariffs · diesel vs battery.
Questions to put on every installer WhatsApp
- Which primary PDF or metro page backs the claim you just made?
- Who registers warranties and by which calendar deadline?
- What happens to export and backup if the first SSEG pack is rejected?
- Can you show a recent CoC and labelled board photo from a similar job?
Those four questions surface more truth than a glossy kWp number — choose installer · red flags · CoC · SSEG.
Bill hygiene after commissioning
Keep three months of pre-solar bills and three months after. Annotate tariff changes, guests, pool season and EV km. Without that diary, “solar did nothing” debates go nowhere — monthly savings · bill still high · read a bill · fixed charges.
Carport EV combo
If you need parking shade anyway, a PV carport can solve asbestos avoidance and EV AC charging in one civil package — price trench, DB and RCD with the structure — carport solar · home charger cost · EV CoC.
Decision tree you can stick on the fridge
- Is the sheet asbestos-containing? If unsure, test — do not drill.
- If yes: choose removal+re-roof, engineered over-clad, carport, or ground-mount.
- Price the civil/roof package before panel kWp fantasies.
- Only then size inverter and battery to the bill and Stage list.
- File disposal certificates and CoC together for resale.
Skipping step 1–3 is how Facebook “bargains” become claim headaches — DIY risks · ground-mount · carport · roof suitability · insurance.
Coastal fibre-cement lookalikes
Not every grey corrugated sheet is asbestos. Modern fibre-cement and metal look similar from the driveway. A wrong assumption either scares you out of a safe roof or pushes you into a dangerous drill. Pay for identification — it is cheaper than a medical or legal surprise. Then match clamps to the real profile — IBR · tile.
Installer selection when roofs are awkward
Pick partners who show prior asbestos-adjacent or re-roof-plus-solar jobs with certificates, not only pretty IBR galleries. Ask who subcontracts removal and who owns leak liability after re-sheet — choose installer · roof warranty · CoC.
Commissioning photo habit
Before the scaffolding leaves, photograph serials, board labels, clamp rows, isolator positions, app settings and the meter face. Store them with the CoC. Future claims, resale and fault-finding all go faster with that pack — CoC · selling with solar · warranty transfer · battery claims.
Who may touch the sheets
Licensed asbestos work is not a DIY Saturday. If the roof must be replaced before solar, sequence the reroof quote and the solar quote so penetrations and flashings are designed once — roof suitability · IBR mounting · tile mounting.
Insurance disclosure
Tell the insurer about material and replacement plans before the array goes up. Claims after an undeclared asbestos disturbance get ugly — insurance · hail claims.
Asbestos roofs need specialists — or a re-roof first
Drilling asbestos-cement sheets without the right controls releases hazardous dust and often voids any remaining roof integrity. Budget a licensed asbestos contractor or a full re-roof to modern sheeting before PV. “We’ll be careful” is not a method statement.
Many insurers and metros effectively require the hazard to be handled before SSEG sign-off. Put the asbestos plan on the critical path of the solar project, not as a surprise week-three variation.
Hold the solar deposit until the asbestos clearance certificate (or re-roof completion) is in the project folder. Sequencing beats variation orders.
Quick questions
Can I DIY brackets on asbestos?
No — do not drill or cut suspected asbestos sheets yourself.
Will every installer refuse?
Many reputable ones will refuse direct fixings; that is a feature, not a bug.
Is over-cladding always allowed?
Only with a proper design and waterproofing plan — ask for drawings.
