Batteries
AC-coupled vs DC-coupled batteries in South Africa
DC-coupled hybrids send PV into a battery-ready inverter that can charge storage before converting to AC — efficient for many new builds. AC-coupled systems add a battery inverter/charger beside an existing grid-tied solar inverter — common for retrofits. Neither is universally best; match topology to whether you already own a healthy NRS-compliant string inverter and how you value conversion losses versus re-use.

Answer first: Pick the topology that fits the hardware you already have and the savings job you need. New installs often land on a DC-coupled hybrid with LiFePO₄. Homes with a working grid-tied string inverter frequently add an AC-coupled battery inverter so they do not scrap PV that is still under warranty. Payback still comes from self-use and shedding cover — not from the coupling buzzword on the quote.
How the power flows
DC-coupled hybrid
PV → hybrid inverter DC bus → battery and/or AC loads. One commissioning path for many new SA homes.
AC-coupled retrofit
Existing PV inverter still makes AC; a second battery inverter charges from AC and islands backup circuits.
Hybrid replacement
Rip-and-replace string inverter with hybrid when the old unit is failing, non-compliant or undersized for backup.

Efficiency and bill maths
Every conversion step loses a few percent. DC-coupled paths can charge the pack with fewer AC round-trips, which helps when you shift midday PV into evening peaks priced at metro retail rates (often R3–R5/kWh on upper residential steps in 2026/27). AC-coupled systems may convert PV→AC→DC into the battery and later DC→AC again — still fine when the alternative is discarding a paid-off string inverter. Export credits remain modest (Cape Town ~152.93 c, City Power ~143.29 c, eThekwini ~184.60 c, Tshwane ~108.25 c incl. VAT approx.) so either topology should prioritise self-consumption — feed-in.
When AC-coupled wins in SA
- String inverter is NRS-compliant, under warranty, and producing well.
- You want backup now without waiting for a full PV rewire.
- Roof strings and MPPT layout would be expensive to re-map onto a new hybrid.
- Finance prefers adding storage as a second asset rather than rewriting the whole EPC.
Confirm anti-islanding and municipal paperwork cover the whole site — both inverters may need to appear on the SSEG file — SSEG, approved inverters.
When DC-coupled / hybrid swap wins
- Greenfield install or failing/old string unit.
- You need higher backup power or EV-ready headroom on one box.
- Installer quotes show AC-coupled double-conversion losses eating evening-shift savings.
- Grey-import or non-listed string gear that will never pass the metro desk.
Load shedding behaviour
Pure string inverters shut PV when the grid dies (anti-islanding). Hybrids and AC-coupled battery inverters can form a local island on essential circuits if designed that way — solar in shedding, essential loads. Ask what still charges the battery from PV during an outage; some AC-coupled pairings need frequency-shift or compatible PV inverters to keep solar alive off-grid.

- Round-trip efficiency assumptions used in the savings model.

SA caveats
Municipal lists and NRS certificates are model-specific. An AC-coupled battery inverter can be approved while an old PV inverter is not — or the reverse. Prepaid exporters on City Power must plan tariff migration — prepaid + solar. This page is educational, not a design sign-off.
Quick FAQ
Is DC always more efficient? Often on paper for new builds; real homes care more about reuse cost and downtime.
Can I mix brands? Only with documented frequency-shift / BMS support — compatibility.
Does coupling change feed-in rates? No — export tariffs are distributor rules, not topology rules.
Commissioning and monitoring differences
DC-coupled hybrids usually give one app for PV, battery and backup. AC-coupled sites may need two portals (legacy PV inverter + battery inverter) unless the installer integrates a third-party monitor. Budget time to learn both; missed fault emails are how small efficiency gaps become weeks of grid import. Ask who responds if the battery inverter islands correctly but the old PV inverter stays offline after shedding.
Export limiting and CT placement
Both topologies rely on correctly placed current transformers / meters so the system knows when to charge, discharge or limit export. On AC-coupled retrofits, CT placement mistakes are common when the battery inverter sits far from the main DB. Wrong polarity can look like “the battery never charges from solar” and destroy the savings model. Insist on a commissioning screenshot of import/export during a sunny mid-day test.
Cost comparison framing
Price three options with the same usable kWh target: (1) battery on existing hybrid ports, (2) AC-coupled add-on keeping the string inverter, (3) hybrid replacement. Include labour, DB changes, SSEG admin and expected annual kWh shifted. A slightly less efficient AC path can still win if it avoids scrapping a five-year-old string inverter under warranty. Related cost context: costs & savings, payback.
Generator and ATS interactions
Homes with generators need interlocking so backup sources do not fight. AC-coupled battery inverters and hybrids each have OEM rules for generator input or ATS dry contacts — ATS FAQ. Do not assume the old generator changeover board still works unchanged after a battery retrofit.
SA installer conversation script
Bring these lines to the site visit: “Show me whether my current inverter is hybrid-ready or string-only.” “If AC-coupled, which PV inverters keep producing during islanding?” “What round-trip efficiency did you use in the savings sheet?” “Who updates the SSEG file for the second inverter?” Write the answers on the quote. Vague replies usually mean the topology was copied from a template, not designed for your DB.
Also ask how firmware updates are handled when two OEMs are involved. Split responsibility is how orphaned systems linger after a storm. Prefer a single accountable installer even if hardware brands differ.
Losses in rand terms
A 5–8% extra round-trip penalty on 8 kWh shifted nightly is roughly 0.4–0.6 kWh/day. At R4/kWh that is about R1.60–R2.40/day — tens of rands a month — real money, but often smaller than the finance cost of replacing a healthy string inverter early. Use your actual tariff steps from 2026 tariffs rather than a national average.
