Do I need SSEG registration for rooftop solar in South Africa?
Yes if your system has a point of connection to the municipal or Eskom grid — even when you never export. NERSA guidance: ≤100 kW grid-connected SSEGs register with the distributor; larger systems register with NERSA. Truly off-grid systems with no grid connection are generally outside that registration path. Not legal advice.
Why registration exists
Safety for line workers, network planning, and correct metering/tariffs. A CoC alone is not the same as SSEG registration. NERSA’s February 2026 clarification (reported by Engineering News / SANews): grid-connected systems ≤100 kW register with the distributor; >100 kW register with NERSA; no grid connection means registration is generally not required under that notice.
