Resilience

Load shedding & backup power

Solar alone does not equal backup. Here’s how hybrid systems keep essentials on when stages hit.

Why many “solar” homes still go dark

Standard grid-tied inverters disconnect when the grid fails (anti-islanding). Without a hybrid inverter and battery (or another backup source), panels cannot legally or safely energise your home during an outage.

A practical backup recipe

  1. Define essential circuits (lights, Wi-Fi/ONT, fridge, selected plugs).
  2. Choose a hybrid inverter with adequate backup rating.
  3. Size battery kWh for your target hours × essential load.
  4. Decide geyser/pool strategy (often shed or timer-based).
  5. Commission changeover correctly and test under load.
Generators and inverters must be integrated safely — amateur changeovers kill equipment and people. Use registered electricians.

Stage patterns & expectations

Higher stages mean longer and more frequent outages. Design for the stages you actually experience, with margin. Solar recharge during daylight between slots dramatically improves multi-day resilience.
