Inverters

What is MPPT on a solar inverter?

MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) is the inverter function that continuously finds the voltage/current combo where your panels produce the most power. Dual or multiple MPPTs let different roof faces (e.g. north and west) work more independently — valuable on South African homes with split roofs or partial shade.

Answer first: MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) is the part of your solar inverter (or charge controller) that continuously hunts for the voltage/current combination where the panels produce the most watts. Without MPPT, a string of panels would sit at a fixed voltage and leave yield on the table whenever irradiance, temperature or shade change — which is every South African day from a Highveld cold front to a Durban summer afternoon.

Why MPPT matters for your rand

Retail metro energy in 2026/27 often sits roughly in the R3.30–R4.70/kWh band before fixed charges (tariffs 2026). Every extra daytime kWh your array actually harvests is a kWh you do not import at that rate — usually worth more than exporting the same kWh at metro feed-in credits (Cape Town ~152.93 c/kWh incl., City Power ~143.29 c, eThekwini ~184.60 c, Tshwane ~108.25 c — see feed-in). MPPT is how the inverter squeezes that harvest when clouds move, panels heat up, or one string sits in afternoon shade.

SituationWhat MPPT doesBuyer note
Clear north roof, one planeTracks the single peak as irradiance and cell temperature changeOne strong MPPT is often enough
North + west (or east) facesSeparate trackers keep each orientation near its own peakDual / multi-MPPT usually pays
Partial shade (chimney, tree, neighbour)Limits how hard a weak string drags a strong oneStill design for shade; MPPT is not magic

One MPPT vs two (or more)

Hybrid inverters sold into SA homes commonly offer two MPPT inputs; some commercial-leaning units offer more. More trackers are not automatically “better” if every panel faces the same clear north plane — you are paying for silicon you will not use. They become valuable when:

  • You split north and west (or east) roofs for afternoon self-use and EV charging.
  • One roof section is shaded for part of the day and the rest is clean.
  • You want room to expand later without restinging the whole array.

Ask the designer for a string map per MPPT: how many panels, which orientation, expected Vmp/Voc at local temperature extremes, and which MPPT each string lands on. Cold winter mornings on the Highveld push Voc up — oversized strings that look fine on a summer datasheet can trip overvoltage alarms in July.

MPPT, battery charging and hybrids

On a hybrid, the same MPPT hardware usually feeds the DC bus that charges the battery and supplies the house. That is why an undersized PV array relative to a large battery feels “slow to fill” after Stage 4 nights, and why an oversized array on a small inverter clips at midday. Pair this page with inverter sizing, panel count and hybrid vs string.

Quote checks that protect you

  • String layout drawing with MPPT assignment — not just “12 × 550 W”.
  • Voltage window check at the coldest design temperature your installer uses for your metro.
  • Whether future EV / heat-pump expansion leaves an MPPT free or needs a second inverter.
  • NRS 097-2-1 type test for the inverter model (NRS 097 explained) — MPPT cleverness does not replace grid compliance.

SA caveats

Dust, bird droppings and light haze still cut current; MPPT cannot invent photons. Clean panels on a sensible schedule (cleaning & maintenance). Microinverters or DC optimisers are a different architecture — useful on complex roofs, often unnecessary on a simple north plane. Do not let a sales deck upsell dual MPPT as a status feature when your roof is one clear face.

How MPPT behaves through a South African day

At sunrise the tracker wakes near a low-power point and climbs as irradiance rises. Midday heat on a black-tiled Midrand roof can push cell temperature well above the 25 °C datasheet, so current stays decent while voltage sags — MPPT follows that moving target. Afternoon thunderclouds common on the Highveld create rapid swings; a sluggish or poorly tuned tracker wastes those minutes. Coastal mist in Cape Town and Durban mornings similarly softens the early curve. None of this shows on a glossy brochure — it shows on your self-consumption dashboard over a month.

Stringing mistakes MPPT cannot fix

  • Mixing different wattage or degraded modules on one tracker
  • Orientations that fight each other on a single MPPT (north string plus heavily shaded west)
  • Cable runs so long that voltage drop eats the gain the tracker found
  • Ignoring manufacturer min/max string counts “because the neighbour did 18”

If a quote cannot explain why panel A and panel B share an MPPT, pause. Pair with cable sizing and earthing for the full electrical picture.

Expanding later without ripping the roof

Families often add an EV or heat pump two years after the first install. Leaving a free MPPT input — or choosing an inverter with documented parallel/expansion options — is cheaper than a second full hybrid later. Note the plan on the as-built pack your CoC electrician files. Finance for phased upgrades: solar finance.

Quick FAQ

Is more MPPT always better? No — match trackers to roof complexity.
Do optimisers replace multi-MPPT? Different tool; useful on complex shade, often unnecessary on a clear north plane.
Does MPPT help at night? No. Night-time loads ride the battery or the grid.

Talking to installers without getting snowed

Useful questions: “How many MPPTs, and which roof faces map to which?” “What is the coldest Voc you designed for?” “What DC/AC ratio are we at?” “If I add six panels for an EV in 2027, where do they land?” Vague answers correlate with vague yields. Bring your latest bill and a roof photo set to the meeting so the conversation stays numeric.
