Do I need surge protection and lightning protection with solar in South Africa?

Yes — plan surge protection (SPDs) on the PV DC, inverter AC and any dedicated EV circuit as part of a SANS 10142-1-aware install, and decide structural lightning protection with a qualified designer when the site risk warrants it. Highveld storms and long DC string runs are how unprotected hybrids and wallboxes die early. SPDs are not a sticker; they are specified parts with replacement intervals after major events.

Updated 27 October 2026 · Illustrative ranges — not a formal quote, credit decision or legal advice.

Answer first: Ask the installer which SPD Type/class sits on DC and AC, where the earth / bonding lands, and whether the EV circuit follows Annex N-style dedicated-circuit practice (verify against official SANS 10142-1 text). “We’ll add arrestors if there’s budget” is how claim disputes start after the first severe storm.

What homeowners should see on the quote

  • DC SPDs on PV strings / combiner as specified for the inverter family.
  • AC SPDs at the DB / hybrid AC output path.
  • Equipotential bonding and earthing notes that match the CoC pack — earthing & bonding.
  • EV wallbox: dedicated circuit, correct RCD pattern per the applicable standard, and SPD strongly recommended on that circuit (secondary installer guidance; confirm on SANS text).
  • Whether a structural LPS (lightning protection system) is in or out of scope — and who designs it.

After a storm — practical steps

  1. Do not climb a wet roof. Photograph visible damage from the ground and attic if safe.
  2. Check inverter / battery app logs for surge, isolation or ground faults.
  3. Trip and leave tripped any RCD that will not reset cleanly; call the CoC electrician.
  4. Log insurer notification early if modules, inverter or wallbox failed — solar insurance · hail & storm.

Savings angle

A fried hybrid mid-summer can erase months of bill savings and delay SSEG export credits while you wait for warranty logistics. SPD line items are cheap insurance relative to inverter replacement bands — inverter replacement · fault codes.

Wholesaler / parts reality

Installers source SPDs and switchgear through SA trade houses (Herholdt’s, ARB, Voltex, ACDC, DBS, SONAH and specialist solar distributors). Ask which brand/model is fitted and whether spares are stocked locally — wholesalers.

What SPDs do not replace

Correct string design, NRS 097 settings, dual-supply labelling, and a lawful CoC. Surge gear on a non-compliant install still leaves you exposed on inspection and insurance — dual-supply labels · CoC · NRS 097.

Commissioning photos that help later claims

Photograph SPD part numbers, earth bar landings, and DB labels before covers go on. After a major surge event, those photos speed installer diagnosis and insurer conversations. Store them with the CoC and NRS settings printout.

If an SPD indicator shows end-of-life after a storm, replace it — do not wait for the next cell. Related: fault codes · DIY risks.

Why SA sites cook unprotected electronics

Long DC runs on metal roofs, frequent grid disturbances around Stage, and summer lightning density on the Highveld create a hostile electrical environment. Inverters, battery BMS boards and EV chargers see transient voltages that SPDs are meant to clamp. Skipping them to shave a few thousand rand off a quote is how mid-life replacements arrive early.

Specification language to demand

  • SPD manufacturer / model on DC and AC, with Type/class stated.
  • Replacement indicators and recommended inspection interval.
  • Earth resistance / bonding notes consistent with the CoC.
  • Separation of surge earths per the designer’s standard — not DIY guesswork.
  • EV circuit: dedicated cable, correct RCD, SPD, IP rating for the mount location.

Secondary SA EV guidance often flags Annex N themes in SANS 10142-1:2024 — we cite that carefully and tell electricians to verify against the official standard text before absolute wording — EV wiring · DIY charger.

Hybrid + battery + wallbox stack

Each box is a surge path. Coordinate SPDs so you do not cascade failures into the pack. After a major cell, check battery fault logs even if PV still produces — BMS damage can be silent until the next Stage slot — fire myths vs install risk · warranty claims · grid charge settings.

Insurance conversation

Send the insurer the SPD scope with the solar disclosure pack. After a loss, photos of fitted SPDs and earth bars support “reasonable precautions” narratives. Undisclosed solar plus no surge gear is a weak starting position — solar insurance · hail / storm.

Maintenance

  1. Visual check of SPD flags at each annual service.
  2. Retorque critical earth connections per installer schedule.
  3. Replace end-of-life cartridges before the next storm season.
  4. Re-test after any DB upgrade, heat-pump or wallbox add-on.

Cost framing

SPD kits are typically a small fraction of hybrid + battery capital. Compare that line to inverter replacement bands and a week of lost self-use at 350–450 c/kWh import. Cheap is expensive when the first November storm arrives — inverter replacement · monthly savings.

DB upgrade moments are SPD moments

When you add a heat pump, induction hob, borehole starter or 7.4 kW wallbox, reopen the surge and bonding design. New circuits change fault loops; old SPDs may be undersized or end-of-life. Bundle SPD verification into every DB quote — DB upgrade · install order · earthing.

Plant-room photos at handover should show part numbers readable without removing covers. Future you (or a buyer) will thank present you — selling with solar.

Rural lines and borehole sites

Smallholdings on long feeders see dirtier power and more induced surges. Pair SPDs with correct cable sizing, isolators and — where a borehole starter sits on backup — motor protection that does not fight the hybrid. Farm diaries should log every nuisance trip after storms — farm solar · borehole on solar · cable sizing.

Commercial light-industrial boards with multiple hybrids need a coordinated surge study, not three unrelated “standard kits.” Ask who signs the design responsibility — commercial SSEG · demand charges.

Bottom line for homeowners: SPDs + bonding + CoC photos are part of payback insurance. Skip them only if you enjoy replacing electronics in December.

If the quote’s electrical BOM has no SPD lines on PV DC and inverter AC, treat it as incomplete — same as a missing CoC path. Ask for the models in writing before deposit.

Quick questions

Is a lightning rod mandatory on every solar roof?

Not automatically. Site risk, building height and existing LPS matter. SPDs on the electrical system are the usual minimum conversation; structural LPS needs a qualified design decision.

Can I add SPDs later?

Often yes, but doing it at install is cleaner for CoC and warranty photos. Retrofits still need a licensed electrician.

Do EV chargers need their own SPD?

Strongly recommended on the dedicated EV circuit in SA installer guidance aligned to SANS 10142-1 Annex N themes — confirm against the official standard text for your job.

Highveld and coastal SPD checklist

Specify Type 1 or Type 1+2 at the DB where lightning density justifies it, plus DC SPDs at the inverter. Ask for indicator windows you can photograph during annual checks. A tripped SPD that nobody notices leaves the hybrid unprotected through the next storm season.

  • DC SPD on each MPPT string entry.
  • AC SPD coordinating with municipal supply bonding.
  • Equipotential bonding notes on the as-built diagram.
