How do import duty and VAT affect solar battery prices in South Africa?

Retail battery rands embed freight, possible customs duty, VAT (15%) and distributor margin. Homeowners should demand Incl. VAT line items on named SKUs and treat WhatsApp “duty free” claims as unverified until a importer/SARS tariff heading is shown.

Answer first: Compare installed Incl. VAT on the exact SKU. If a quote shows excl. VAT only, add VAT and ask whether customs duty and freight are already in the distributor price. This desk does not invent duty percentages — confirm the tariff heading with the importer or a customs practitioner.

Checklist for honest landed-cost talk

  1. Named SKU + serial-range warranty region (SA).
  2. Incl. VAT unit price from a local distributor stock list.
  3. Written statement whether the price is bonded/landed or subject to further duty.
  4. Installer margin and labour separated from hardware.

Grey imports

Grey boxes can look cheaper until warranty registration fails or spares take months. Prefer local stock paths with CoC-capable installers — VAT on solar · red flags · read a quote.

MKII / street price discipline

Anchor prices to the named distributor, dated. For BlueNova MKII: ACDC Dynamics — the distributor BlueNova names for MKII — lists BN52V-314-16K/SBB-MK2 at R46 008 excl. VAT list, special net R32 471.26 excl. / R37 341.95 incl. VAT, out of stock at all five branches on 27 Oct 2026 (ACDC Dynamics); that is about R2 900 per usable kWh on the OEM’s 12.86 kWh usable at 80% DoD (BlueNova manual v1.2). Retailer pages that show older SKUs or strike-through prices are not the reference.

SA desk notes that keep quotes honest

Worked homeowner checklist

  1. Photograph the DB, roof and meter before the survey.
  2. Export twelve months of kWh or summer+winter bills.
  3. Write Stage priorities (fridge, routers, lights) before shopping kWh.
  4. File CoC, warranties and SSEG refs in one folder after handover.

How distributor quotes usually embed costs

Local distributors often quote landed Incl. VAT stock. That stack silently includes overseas FOB, freight, insurance, possible duty, clearing, warehousing and their margin. A “cheaper” grey import that omits duty/VAT on a WhatsApp invoice is a compliance and warranty risk, not a bargain.

  • Ask: is this price from SA warehouse stock today?
  • Ask: warranty registration country and who processes claims?
  • Ask: lead time if OOS — do not pay full deposit on vapour SKUs.

Comparing R/usable-kWh fairly

Divide Incl. VAT pack price by usable kWh at warranty DoD. A cheaper sticker with shallower DoD can lose. Add installer labour, fusing, cabinet and delivery. Related: sticker vs usable · 10 kWh cost · read a quote · check a quote.

What this desk will not invent

We will not publish a made-up duty percentage for LiFePO₄ imports. Tariff headings and rebate programmes change. If a salesperson quotes a duty number, ask for the heading and a written landed-cost sheet. SARS / customs practitioners beat blog maths. BlueNova MKII is priced from the dated ACDC Dynamics listing (R37 341.95 incl. VAT special net, out of stock, 27 Oct 2026).

Document pack for a landed-cost conversation

  1. Distributor stock list screenshot with SKU and Incl. VAT.
  2. OEM datasheet with usable kWh / DoD.
  3. Warranty registration URL and SA contact.
  4. Installer labour + balance-of-system Incl. VAT.
  5. If anyone cites duty %, the tariff heading and a written clearing estimate.

Without that pack, you are negotiating anecdotes. Related: VAT · red flags · warranties · check a quote · costs & savings.

Subscription / finance aside

If you finance or subscribe, duty/VAT are usually already inside the monthly figure — ask whether hardware ownership transfers and who claims warranty. Compare 10-year cash vs subscription honestly — subscription 10y · bond/finance · finance hub.

Worked conversation with a salesperson

You: “Show me Incl. VAT for SKU X from SA stock today, usable kWh at warranty DoD, and warranty registration steps.” Them: “Excl. VAT is R___, install extra.” You: “Write Incl. VAT hardware + labour + delivery as three lines. If duty is still open on this shipment, say so in writing.” Them: “WhatsApp special without VAT.” You: leave.

That script prevents most landed-cost surprises. Add a second distributor quote the same week. If prices differ by more than ~10–15% on the same SKU, ask about stock age, parallel firmware revisions, and whether cells are new-grade per OEM claims.

  • Photograph nameplates on delivery before signing.
  • Refuse sealed boxes with damaged packaging without an open-box check.
  • Register serials before the deadline printed in the warranty PDF.

Commercial vs home paperwork

Businesses may have additional capital-allowance and VAT-input questions — those are tax-practitioner territory, not blog DIY. Homeowners on residential tariffs should still insist on tax invoices that show VAT clearly for insurance and resale files.

Insurance and resale files need tax invoices

Insurers and future buyers ask for tax invoices that show VAT and serials. A duty-dodging WhatsApp special that never becomes a proper invoice can sink a claim after theft or hail. Budget the paperwork as part of landed cost — insurance · theft · hail · warranty transfer · property value.

Bottom line on duty and VAT

Pay Incl. VAT on named local stock, verify usable kWh, and leave unverified duty percentages and undated retailer prices out of published advice. That discipline protects both your wallet and this desk’s sourcing rules.

Landed cost checklist before you wire money offshore

A grey-import battery quote that looks cheap on Alibaba is not a landed SA price. Add freight, marine insurance, customs clearing, import duty where it applies, VAT on the CIF+duty base, and local delivery. Then add a registered electrician and CoC — none of that is optional for a legal install.

Prefer local stock with a written SA warranty and a phone number that answers. If the supplier cannot name the HS code, the duty treatment, and who pays VAT at the border, walk away. Keep the invoice, packing list, and SARS release on file; you will need them if the pack fails under warranty or the metro asks for proof of compliant equipment.

For local stock, still demand a tax invoice with VAT number, serial list, and warranty start date. Parallel-import “box only” deals that skip those documents leave you without a claim path when a BMS fails in year two.

If a freight forwarder quotes “duties included,” get the HS code and duty rate in the email. Inclusive quotes that cannot show the rate are not inclusive — they are vague.

Quick questions

Can you quote my duty %?

Not from this page — duty depends on tariff heading and shipment. Ask the importer/SARS channel with the commercial invoice.

Is VAT 15% on batteries?

VAT is generally levied on taxable supplies in SA; your invoice should show it. Confirm with the supplier’s tax invoice.

Why do two shops differ by thousands?

Stock age, freight lots, promo margins and whether install is bundled — compare Incl. VAT on the same SKU.
