EV charging
Which public EV charging networks operate in South Africa?
South Africa’s public map is a mix of national CPOs and destination hosts. GridCars is still the largest by cited footprint; SAEV Charge is drawing attention with battery-backed DC priced far below typical public DC at its Richmond Solar MD site (~R3.49/kWh vs GridCars ~R7.35, per DriveElectric). Always check the live app — counts and tariffs move.

Answer first: Use public DC for road trips and emergencies. Keep routine kilometres on home or workplace AC. No single network covers every corridor yet — especially parts of the Northern Cape and Limpopo called out in 2025–2026 press — so plan before you leave.
Operator snapshot (late 2026)
| Operator | What sources say | Tariff notes | Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| GridCars | ~445 sites, ~650 chargers, 1 200+ connectors (Engineering News, Jan 2026); ChargePocket app | ~R7.35/kWh DC and ~R5.88/kWh AC cited via DriveElectric / MyBroadband | Largest CPO footprint; check live map for derates |
| SAEV Charge | Battery-backed DC; Richmond site at Solar MD factory; ~400-station plan over four years (company / press) | ~R3.49/kWh DC (R2.49 when battery >90%) at Richmond per DriveElectric | Unclear if those rates apply at sites without large solar+BESS |
| Rubicon Charge | 100+ public chargers claimed; Wallbox/Autel hardware; MyBroadband growth pieces have also cited ~123 stations in end-2025 tellings — reconcile on the live map | FAQ examples ~R7.00/kWh DC · ~R5.88/kWh AC (host may vary) | Host tariffs differ |
| Zero Carbon Charge (CHARGE) | Off-grid solar+battery ultra-fast corridor sites (N12 Wolmaransstad; N3 Roadside Exit 107 & N3 Tugela Exit 207 launched May 2026 per company press); DBSA funding reported; N1 next on the roadmap | Session pricing via app; published hub DC figures have sometimes sat above Rubicon FAQ examples — verify live | Confirm live pins before relying on a route |
| Chargify | Destination / hotel / mall / hospital focus; City Lodge Hotels PR (29 Jan 2026) says network of >120 charging stations (Mercedes-Benz SA–invested, est. 2023). Public homepage locations list counted ~26 named partner sites on 27 Oct 2026 (hotels, Netcare, Caltex, malls); City Lodge PR names 8 group hotels; partner copy still claims >120 stations | Host-set | >120 remains unaudited PR — no public pin API; use live map (27 Oct news) |
| BMW Destination | Partner hotels / retail; often mapped via GridCars; open to all EVs per BMW SA public-charging pages | Often free or low for guests; host-dependent | Availability tied to venue hours |
| Naamsa corridor plan | ~120 stations on main routes planned | — | Not at financial close as of Sep 2025 status reporting — planned / delayed, not a live network |
Station counts above are sourced claims or press figures, not a live census. Treat “unknown / confirm on map” as a feature, not a dodge. Fuel-retail majors (Engen, Astron, BP, Shell, TotalEnergies, Sasol) often host CPO-partnered points rather than running independent national networks — Engen led mid-2025 petrol-station EV tables in MyBroadband coverage; BP’s earlier Pulse pilot hardware was reported as never commissioned for SA near-term priority.
How the networks differ in practice
GridCars remains the default “will there be something on this highway?” answer for many corridors, with the ChargePocket app and Google Maps listings. Press still notes route gaps and occasional power derates — arrive with a Plan B.
Rubicon Charge blends public pins with commercial AC hardware retail (Wallbox, Autel and peers). Useful if you already buy electrical gear through Rubicon channels and want one counterparty for site + public sessions.
CHARGE (Zero Carbon Charge) bets on solar+battery ultra-fast hubs that keep working when the local feeder is unhappy. Corridor density is still selective — excellent when your route hits a live hub, useless as a blanket assumption.
Chargify is destination-heavy: hotels in the City Lodge group, malls, hospitals and lifestyle sites. That is exactly where overnight guests and shoppers need Type 2 AC more than 150 kW DC. As of 27 Oct 2026 we counted ~26 named partner sites on chargify.co.za’s public list and verified eight City Lodge-group hotels from the hotel PR; keep >120 labelled as partner PR until a public pin API exists.
SAEV Charge public sites matter for the battery-backed tariff story documented at Richmond. Home retail (Victron EV Charging Station NS listed around R9 500; Teltonika TeltoCharge roughly R17 900–R20 500 on saevcharge.co.za as fetched Oct 2026) is a separate decision from public DC pricing.
How to choose on a trip
- Filter the app for CCS2 (DC) and Type 2 (AC) and the kW your car can take — see connectors.
- Prefer sites with recent “available” status and, where published, battery-backed uptime.
- Budget public DC at roughly R6–R8/kWh unless the host advertises otherwise — Richmond’s ~R3.49 is the standout cheap example, not the national average.
- Carry a Type 2 cable for AC posts that are untethered.
- Screenshot the pin and tariff before you leave cell coverage; Northern Cape / Limpopo gaps remain a consumer-protection theme in press.
Home and workplace still win on rand/km
At metro home rates around R3.30–R4.70/kWh (2026/27 energy component), 16–18 kWh for ~100 km often lands near R53–R85 — usually below public DC and far below petrol at inland 95 prices near R30/ℓ. Full maths: cost to charge an EV in SA. Workplace AC that soaks rooftop PV can undercut home rates on sunny weekdays — workplace charging. Time-of-use and prepaid households should read TOU / prepaid EV before assuming every night-time kWh is equal.
Apps and payment hygiene
Expect a mix of ChargePocket (GridCars), operator apps (Rubicon, CHARGE, Chargify, SAEV), tap-to-pay, and RFID cards. Create accounts before a long weekend. Keep a second payment method. If a site is “free for guests,” confirm at reception — mapped does not always mean powered.
What “coverage” still does not mean
A pin on a map is not a promise of 150 kW when you arrive. Derates, occupied bays, broken card readers and venue-hour locks are normal failure modes. Build a 30–40 km buffer into highway legs. If your car’s onboard AC is only 7 kW, a destination Type 2 post at a City Lodge / Courtyard-style hotel (often Chargify-hosted per City Lodge’s Jan 2026 PR) may matter more than a busy DC plaza.
Comparing rand/kWh without fooling yourself
App screenshots lie when idle fees, connection fees or “per minute after 60 minutes” rules apply. Prefer operators that publish energy rates clearly. DriveElectric’s documentation of SAEV Richmond near R3.49/kWh versus GridCars near R7.35/kWh is a reminder that battery-backed solar sites can undercut corridor averages — it is not a national price list. Rubicon’s FAQ examples (~R7.00 DC / ~R5.88 AC) are another dated snapshot; hosts may differ. CHARGE hub pages have published DC figures that sometimes sat higher — verify before you budget a Free State crossing.
Home charger still first
Buy the wallbox before you optimise public apps. A dedicated ~7.4 kW Type 2 circuit with a CoC covers routine kilometres; public networks cover the weekend you forget to plug in. Brand shortlist hygiene: local stock and warranty support among peers (SAEV Victron/Teltonika listings, Wallbox via Rubicon-class retail, Zaptec, Schneider EVlink, ChargePoint SA) — home charger guide.
Quick FAQ
Is Chargify bigger than GridCars? No evidence for that. GridCars holds the largest cited CPO footprint; Chargify’s >120 claim is partner PR focused on destination sites.
Should I wait for the Naamsa 120-station corridor? Treat it as planned / delayed until financial close is reported — do not plan a 2026 road trip around it.
Can I CHAdeMO everywhere? New SA / EU-style EVs are CCS2 for DC and Type 2 for AC; CHAdeMO is legacy — connectors.
