Loads & backup

Can I run a garden irrigation pump on solar in South Africa?

Most suburban irrigation pumps (roughly 0.37–1.1 kW) run cleanly from PV surplus on a timer; putting them on the Stage essentials board is usually the wrong trade against fridges and routers. Soft-start, correct breaker sizing and a Contactor/timer beat random plug-sharing with the pool or borehole.

Answer first: Read the nameplate amps, decide sun-hour irrigation vs Stage backup, and put the circuit on a timed non-essential contactor where possible — JoJo / pressure pump · borehole · essentials · export vs self-use.

Rand sketch

A 0.75 kW pump for 45 minutes uses ~0.56 kWh. On a 360 c/kWh block that is about R2 of avoided import when PV feeds it — small money, but free "export" you would otherwise spill on a zero-export site. Running the same block from a 5 kWh usable battery during Stage burns ~10% of a tight backup pack — zero-export · Stage 4 · usable kWh.

Soft-start and hybrids

Hard motor starts nuisance-trip small hybrids the same way geysers and borehole pumps do. Ask for soft-start or a soft-starter line item Incl. VAT — overload lessons · nuisance trips · read a quote.

Water-wise scheduling

  • Irrigate in low-evaporation morning windows that still see PV.
  • Prefer drip zones over high-pressure misting on tight arrays.
  • Skip irrigation on Stage days when the battery SoC is already low — SoC settings · Stage strategy.

Estate and municipal notes

Some estates restrict daytime sprinkler noise or municipal water windows. Align the timer with both PV and HOA rules — estate / HOA · holiday home · farm solar.

Commissioning checklist

  1. Nameplate photo in the handover pack.
  2. Breaker / contactor labelled "irrigation — non-essential."
  3. Timer program written down (not only in the app).
  4. Surge / SPD coordination on outdoor boards — SPDs · earthing.

SA desk notes that keep quotes honest

Worked homeowner checklist

  1. Photograph the DB, roof and meter before the survey.
  2. Export twelve months of kWh or summer+winter bills.
  3. Write Stage priorities (fridge, routers, lights) before shopping kWh.
  4. File CoC, warranties and SSEG refs in one folder after handover.

Tariff and fixed-charge reminder

Self-use savings sit on top of fixed charges that do not disappear. Model both before you celebrate a payback slide — fixed charges · monthly savings · export vs self-use · tariffs 2026.

Safety and paperwork close

  • No DIY on dual-supply boards or MC4 strings.
  • Keep dual-supply labels readable for inspectors.
  • Register warranties before the deadline printed on the pack.

Monitoring and aftercare

Watch daily kWh, backup SoC before forecast Stages, and any new earth-leakage or isolation alarms. Export CSVs monthly so cloud portal changes do not erase your history — monitoring numbers · Wi-Fi dongle · SoC settings.

When to call vs when to wait

Call for burning smells, repeated RCD trips, zero production in full sun with isolators on, or firmware prompts you do not understand. Wait-and-log for single Stage-restore blips that do not repeat — fault codes · nuisance trips · MC4.

Borehole vs municipal irrigation

Borehole irrigation adds motor size, dry-run protection and sometimes three-phase questions. Municipal tap irrigation is usually smaller but may face water-restriction timers that clash with your PV peak — align both calendars — borehole · JoJo pressure · farm solar · phase.

Contactor and smart-home hooks

A cheap Wi-Fi plug is not a pump contactor. Use appropriately rated contactors, residual protection and OEM guidance. Smart schedules that start five zones at once can brown out a small hybrid even in sun — stagger zones — overload · inverter size · stacking.

Worked weekly kWh sketch

Four 40-minute zones at 0.75 kW ≈ 2 kWh/day. Over a 30-day month that is ~60 kWh — roughly R190–R280 at 320–470 c if all imported, or a meaningful self-use block if timed under PV. On zero-export sites this is often better than spilling — zero-export · export vs self-use · monthly savings.

Lightning and outdoor boards

Irrigation controllers die in Highveld storms. Budget SPDs and weatherproof enclosures; keep low-voltage probe wires tidy — SPDs · lightning · earthing · AFDD context.

Sources homeowners should open themselves

Stage-season operating rules

Bottom line for SA homeowners

Treat this as a decision aid with named trade-offs, not a brochure. Demand Incl. VAT scopes, NRS-listed hardware where it applies, written SSEG ownership, and a backup board that matches how your household actually survives Stage. If a partner cannot explain those four items without slogans, keep shopping — get quotes · check a quote · read a quote · is solar worth it · payback · monthly savings.

Keep primary PDFs (metro, OEM, warranty) beside this article. When figures disagree, the live primary wins. Update your own notes after tariff changes each year — tariffs 2026 · metro tariffs · fixed charges · VAT on solar · bond finance · lease vs buy.

Homeowner checklist before you spend

  • Write the decision on one page: what problem this solves under Stage, what it costs in rand bands, and who signs the CoC.
  • Ask the installer for the primary PDF (OEM, metro tariff, SSEG form) that backs any number on the quote.
  • Photograph serials, labels and the DB before and after work — claims and warranty desks start there.
  • Keep guest monitoring logins with the invoice so a future buyer or insurer can verify the plant.

Stage-weekend reality check

Model the worst Stage window you actually live through, not a brochure day. Essentials first, then comfort loads. If the plant cannot cover fridge, lights, fibre and one work laptop through that window, resize before you chase export credits — essentials · Stage strategy · Stage 4 battery · SoC settings · Stage table.

Documents to keep for five years

Invoice PDF, CoC number, dual-supply photos, export-limit screenshot, CT polarity photo, firmware version, and the guest portal login. When a fault or sale appears later, that pack beats a WhatsApp thread — labels · export limit · CT clamps · firmware · selling with solar.

Quick questions

Should irrigation sit on backup overnight?

Almost never for lawns — prefer PV timers; reserve Stage for critical food/livestock watering.

Will a soft-starter always be required?

Not always, but it is cheap insurance on small hybrids — ask for the nameplate amp draw first.

Can I share the borehole soft-starter?

Prefer dedicated protection sized to each motor unless the designer explicitly combines them.
