Batteries
How long does a solar battery last in South Africa?
Most LiFePO₄ home batteries sold in South Africa are warranted for about 5–12 years or a stated cycle/throughput limit (whichever comes first), with end-of-warranty capacity floors often near 60–70%. Calendar life in mild indoor plant rooms commonly reaches a decade-plus when depth of discharge and heat are managed; hot garages and daily 100% cycles pull that forward. Read the SA-specific letter for your exact SKU — Solar MD’s SS4160, for example, states 12 years or 84 MWh to ≥60%.

Answer first: Plan on 8–15 years of useful home service for a quality LiFePO₄ pack with a real SA claims path, then budget a replacement or expansion. Warranty years are a floor for claims, not a prophecy that the pack dies the next day.
What “life” means on a quote
| Term | What owners should hear |
|---|---|
| Calendar warranty | Years from invoice/commissioning — often 5, 10 or 12. |
| Cycle / throughput limit | e.g. 4 000–7 000 cycles or 26–84 MWh; ends cover early if you cycle hard. |
| Residual capacity | Often ≥60% (sometimes ≥70% under a test protocol) at end of cover. |
| Usable life after warranty | Many packs still work; claims just get harder. Paid service windows exist on some brands. |

- Solar MD SS4160: SA warranty statement rev. 10 Oct 2025 — 12 years or 84 MWh to ≥60%, plus 5-year defects; claims via intermediary — warranty explained.
- Freedom Won eTower / ENVA: cycle-or-year frames with published residual tests — check the sheet matching your serial.
- BlueNova RacPower / SBB: commonly a 10-year product warranty path via accredited installers; SBB MKII (~16 kWh) carries OEM 10y / 6 000 cycles @ ≤80% DoD language on current sheets.
- Pylontech / Sunsynk wall packs: often 5–10 years depending on model and registration — verify the letter tied to your SKU.
What shortens life in South African homes
- Heat: closed tin roofs, west-facing garages, no airflow around wall mounts.
- Daily 100% DoD: especially with aggressive grid-charge + evening drain every Stage week.
- Wrong BMS settings: inverter not talking CAN; voltage-only control that over-stresses cells.
- Ignored swelling / fault codes: running through warnings to “finish the week.”
- Outdoor installs without an outdoor-rated enclosure.
Opposite habits — indoor plant room, 80–90% DoD cap, firmware updates, SPD/earthing done properly — are how decade-plus packs show up in installer WhatsApp groups. Related: cycles & warranty · indoor vs outdoor · SPD.
Replacement economics (illustrative)
If a 10 kWh usable pack displaced 250 kWh/month of ~400 c imports for eight years, that is roughly R96 000 of cumulative energy value before fixed charges and before the inverter’s own life. A mid-life capacity top-up (add a compatible module) often beats a full rip-and-replace — but only if the brand still expands on the same BMS family. Solar MD’s LV backward-compatibility story since 2016 is one reason expandability shows up in longevity conversations; BYD LV Flex Lite, by contrast, stays inside its own family. Owner checklist
- Save the SA warranty PDF that names your model.
- Register on time; screenshot confirmation.
- Record commissioning firmware and serials on the CoC pack.
- Set portal alerts for high temperature and low residual capacity.
- Revisit DoD and grid-charge settings every municipal tariff July.
Cycle maths you can do on a napkin
Take usable kWh × cycles/day × 365. A 10 kWh usable pack at one full-equivalent cycle/day puts through ~3.65 MWh/year. A warranty that caps throughput at 30 MWh would bind in ~8 years; a 60 MWh cap binds near 16 years — so the calendar year limit usually wins first on gentle homes. Stage-heavy homes that grid-charge and drain twice a day can hit throughput caps early. Log equivalent full cycles from the BMS monthly if the app exposes them.
Heat is the quiet killer
LiFePO₄ prefers roughly room-temperature plant rooms. A sealed garage that hits 40 °C+ in January accelerates calendar ageing even if cycle counts look modest. Leave manufacturer clearances, avoid stacking boxes against the pack, and never trap a wall mount behind sealed cupboard doors. Outdoor-rated cabinets exist for a reason on Highveld plots — indoor still wins when you have the space — indoor vs outdoor.
When to budget a mid-life top-up
If year-6 residual capacity on the BMS sits near 80% and Stage runtime has become tight, adding a compatible module is often cheaper than a full brand swap — provided the OEM still sells matching BMS generations. Ask the original installer for a written expansion SKU before the product line sunsets. Keep serial photos; claims and expansions both need them — claim steps · add battery.
Where this sits on the desk
Pair with batteries & BESS, cycles & warranty, and the Solar MD 12y / 84 MWh note. For bill impact of ageing packs, revisit monthly savings once a year after tariff July.
Lead-acid and second-life packs — why most homes skip them
Flooded or AGM banks still appear in off-grid farm quotes. For daily urban hybrid cycling they usually lose on throughput, maintenance and depth-of-discharge limits. Second-life EV modules can look cheap per kWh; without a documented BMS, fire plan and SA claims path they are a hobbyist project, not a bonded home asset. Stick to new LiFePO₄ with a local intermediary on the invoice unless you truly know the chemistry stack.
Generator hybrids that barely cycle the battery will chronologically age the pack anyway — calendar chemistry does not care that you “only used it in Stage 6.” If the battery is mostly jewellery, buy less storage and more self-use controls.
Warranty registration windows that quietly expire
Several SA brands start the calendar clock on invoice or commissioning and still require online registration within 30–90 days. Miss the window and you may keep the product but lose the easy claims path. Put registration on the same punch-list as the CoC photo pack: serials, installer accreditation number, firmware version, and a clear photo of the nameplate. Keep the confirmation email in the same folder as the SSEG approval.
If you bought through a wholesaler via the installer, confirm who is listed as the “intermediary” on the warranty letter. Solar MD’s SA statement routes claims via the intermediary; Freedom Won, BlueNova and Hubble each have their own portal or email desk. A Facebook Marketplace private sale with no intermediary on file is how decade-long warranties become “sorry, out of luck.”
Annual habit: every municipal tariff July, open the BMS app, note residual capacity and equivalent full cycles, and re-check DoD / grid-charge settings so you are not burning throughput for cheap midday export. Related: cycles & warranty · claim steps.
Quick questions
Does the battery die when the warranty ends?
Usually not. Warranty end means claims get harder; many LiFePO₄ packs still deliver reduced capacity for years if treated well.
Is lead-acid cheaper over 10 years?
Rarely for daily solar cycling. Upfront cost looks lower; cycle life and maintenance usually lose to LiFePO₄ in SA hybrid homes.
Should I buy a bigger pack so it lasts longer?
A larger pack at shallower DoD can age more gently and cover Stage better, but only if you can afford it and the hybrid can charge it from PV. Do not oversize purely for marketing cycle counts.
