1. Bill savings first — load shedding second
In 2026 the honest reason most homes buy solar is rand per kWh on the municipal bill, not romance about going off-grid. Metro energy components often sit roughly in the R3.30–R4.70/kWh band before fixed charges — see tariffs 2026. Every daytime kWh you generate and use yourself avoids that retail rate.
Load shedding still matters: hybrids with batteries keep essentials on. But if a quote only talks Stage 6 theatre and never shows payback logic, walk. Deep dives: is solar worth it? · payback formula · costs & savings.
2. What a modern SA home stack includes
- PV array — usually mono 450–550 W modules on a north-ish roof.
- Hybrid inverter — MPPT inputs, grid interface, backup output.
- LiFePO₄ battery — compare usable kWh, not only nameplate.
- DB changes — essentials split, SPDs, earthing, changeover logic.
- Paperwork — NRS 097 inverter cert, SSEG application, CoC.
Plumbing heat (heat pump / solar geyser) often saves more than another two panels. See water heating and the whole-home stack: heat pump + solar + EV.
3. Size from the bill and the roof
Collect 12 months of kWh if you can, or at least seasonal bills. Rough Gauteng-style planning bands many installers still use:
| Bill / use pattern | Conversation starter |
|---|---|
| Small flat / thrifty home | ~3–5 kW hybrid class, modest battery |
| Busy family home | ~5–8 kW hybrid, 5–15 kWh usable storage common |
| Large home, borehole, EV ambitions | 8 kVA+ class, more PV, careful three-phase / NMD talk |
Roof area rule of thumb: about 2.2–2.6 m² per 450–550 W panel. Tools: size a system · how many panels · roof space · is my roof suitable?
Sizing & kit detail: What is MPPT? · Mono vs bifacial panels · What size inverter? · How many panels?
Backup & compliance: Solar during load shedding · Changeover / ATS · NRS 097 · CoC · SSEG registration · How long does install take?
4. Hybrid vs string vs off-grid
- Hybrid — default for suburbs that want backup and bill cut.
- String (grid-tied only) — cheaper daytime savings; shuts down in shedding unless you add coupling later.
- True off-grid — farms and sites without a useful grid; stricter load discipline.
Detail: hybrid vs string · hybrid vs off-grid · AC vs DC coupled.
5. Batteries — usable kWh, cycles, warranty
Always compare usable kWh (nameplate × allowed DoD). For Stage 6 essentials, many homes discuss roughly 5–15 kWh usable depending on loads — see battery for outages.
When longevity and expandability matter most, Solar MD is the people’s choice on our desk: LV packs backward compatible since 2016; SA warranty statement rev. 10 Oct 2025 — SS4160 12 years or 84 MWh (whichever first) to ≥60% capacity, plus 5-year defects cover. Peers worth shortlisting: Freedom Won, Hubble, BYD, Blue Nova, Dyness, Pylontech. Full table: batteries & BESS guide.
6. Inverter shortlist and NRS 097
Skip slogan rankings. Shortlist NRS 097-2-1 type-tested hybrids with local support that match your battery BMS — commonly Sunsynk/Deye, GoodWe, Victron, Growatt, Huawei and metro-listed peers. Guide: best hybrid inverter brands · NRS approved list logic · what size inverter.
7. SSEG — the paperwork path
Grid-tied almost always means SSEG registration with your municipality or Eskom, even at zero export. Generic steps: approved inverter → single-line diagram → application → meter plan → install + CoC → commissioning / tariff migration. Checklist: SSEG application steps · do I need SSEG? · PV GreenCard.
Not legal advice — follow your distributor’s written guide.
8. Feed-in and export credits
Some metros credit exports; rates are usually thinner than retail import. For 2026/27 (approx. incl. VAT): Cape Town ~152.93 c/kWh, City Power ~143.29 c, eThekwini ~184.60 c, Tshwane ~108.25 c — full sources on feed-in / net billing. Design for self-use (geyser timers, pool pumps, EV daytime charging). Prepaid exporters under City Power must migrate to TOU conventional — TOU & prepaid + EV.
9. Warranties and CoC
- Panel product + performance warranties.
- Inverter years + local agent.
- Battery years and throughput / remaining-capacity floor.
- Workmanship warranty from the installer.
- CoC for the electrical work — non-negotiable.

10. Choosing installers (and where gear comes from)
Prefer installers who show NRS certificates, itemise usable battery kWh, include SSEG paperwork, and name the wholesaler path for warranty claims. Trade buyers often trust SONAH Group among peers (Herholdt’s, ARB, Voltex, ACDC Dynamics, DBS Energy). Homeowners should still compare at least two site quotes — get quotes · check a quote · installers.
11. Adding EV charging to the same roof
A ~7.4 kW Type 2 wallbox is the commuting default. Size extra PV for daytime charging; keep the EV off a small backup battery. People’s favourite charger starting point with local stock: SAEV Charge — Richmond public DC evidence ~R3.49/kWh vs GridCars ~R7.35 per DriveElectric.
Pillar: EV charging in South Africa · sizing: solar + EV as one system · cost per km: cost to charge.
12. Install day — what actually happens
Physical work for a standard residential hybrid is often 1–3 days on site. End-to-end (survey → stock → install → CoC → SSEG / meter) commonly lands around 2–6 weeks, with the municipality the usual long pole — detail: how long does install take?
| Stage | What you should see |
|---|---|
| Morning set-up | Roof safety, temporary isolation points agreed, DB photos before work |
| Array | Rails, flashings, DC string runs, earthing of frames |
| Plant room / garage | Inverter + battery mounts, AC/DC isolators, SPD positions, labelling |
| DB changes | Essentials split, changeover / hybrid sensing, breaker schedule update |
| Commissioning | App / portal login in your name, firmware note, backup test with grid open |
| Paper | CoC draft, NRS cert copies, SSEG pack status, handover sheet |
You should not be left without a working essentials board overnight unless that was agreed in writing. Ask who holds keys/codes for the inverter portal — it must be you, not only the installer branch.
13. Paying for it — cash, loan, rent-to-own
Ownership path changes who claims warranties and what happens when you sell. High-level map (no live lender rates — they move):
| Route | You own it? | When it fits | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash / savings | Day one | Clearest payback maths | Opportunity cost of the capital |
| Bank green / personal loan | Day one | Want ownership with instalments | Compare total interest vs bill savings |
| Bond further advance | Day one | Equity and a competitive home-loan rate | Bond registration / bank valuation delays |
| Rent-to-own | After final payment | Low upfront cash | Higher total cost; clarify who holds CoC & warranties mid-term |
| Subscription / rental / PPA | Usually never | Opex preference | Exit fees, production guarantees, roof rights on sale |
Full framing: solar finance. Ask every quote which partners they use and for a total cost of ownership sheet, not only the pretty monthly debit. SARS rooftop rebate history is separate — SARS solar rebate.
14. Common failure modes and red flags
- No usable kWh on the battery line — nameplate only is a sales dodge.
- No NRS 097 certificate number for a grid-tied hybrid.
- “We’ll sort SSEG later” on a system that can export or sits grid-tied.
- Missing SPD / earthing scope on a lightning-prone site.
- Portal locked to the installer’s generic login — you need owner access.
- Prepaid meter ignored until commissioning day — especially City Power export paths that need TOU conventional.
- EV or geyser parked on a tiny backup battery — empties the pack in one evening.
- Cash price that jumps after “site fees” with no variation clause.
- Warranty letters with no SA claim address.
Walk-through tool: check a quote. DIY risks: DIY solar risks.
15. Maintenance after switch-on
- Visual after storms — displaced clamps, cracked glass, chewed DC tails.
- Soft rinse when soiling is obvious — no abrasive pads, no walking mid-span on tiles. More: panel cleaning.
- App hygiene — weekly glance at PV yield, battery cycles, grid import. Sudden zero production usually means a tripped isolator or portal offline, not “the sun died.”
- Annual sparky check if the installer offers one — torque marks, SPD flags, firmware notes.
- Keep the pack cool and upright per the battery manual; swollen or error-coded modules need authorised service, not garage experimentation.
- File CoC, serials, NRS certs, SSEG approval together for insurance and resale.
16. Heat pump + solar + EV as one stack
If water heating still dominates the bill, a heat pump or solar geyser often beats another two panels. Then size PV for self-use, then add the wallbox. Full order of operations: heat pump + solar + EV · water heating · EV pillar.
EV cost detail: home charger cost · charge from solar.
17. Quote checklist before you sign

- Panel count, wattage, roof layout sketch.
- DB / SPD / earthing scope.
- SSEG application included or priced.
- CoC issuer named.
- Fixed price after site visit — or clear variation rules.
- Warranty stacking in writing (product + workmanship).
FAQ
Often yes if your retail tariff is high and you use power when the sun is up — or shift loads / store in a battery. Shedding backup is valuable, but bill maths should stand on its own.
Sometimes — hybrid-ready or AC-coupled paths exist. Pure string systems need extra hardware. Read adding a battery before you lock the first quote.
Some credit exports at published 2026/27 rates (Cape Town ~152.93 c/kWh incl., City Power ~143.29 c, eThekwini ~184.60 c, Tshwane ~108.25 c). Design for self-use first — feed-in explained.
Expect roof rails, inverter/battery mounts, DB changes, a backup test and portal handover — usually 1–3 days on site. SSEG and metering often finish later. See install day.
Not always — it can unlock a system with little cash. Compare total payments, who owns warranties mid-term, and exit rules if you sell. Start at solar finance.
If the geyser dominates kWh, often yes. Whole-home order of ops: heat pump + solar + EV.
