Solar Payback in SA Metros — How to Think About It

A framing guide for solar payback across South African metros — tariffs, fixed charges, self-consumption and honest assumptions.

Payback is not a single national number. Cape Town, Johannesburg, eThekwini, Tshwane and other distributors price electricity differently, and fixed charges dilute solar savings if ignored.

Build the calculation properly

  • Start from your actual tariff schedule (energy + fixed/capacity charges).
  • Estimate daytime self-consumption — not 100% of PV yield.
  • Value backup separately if bill-only payback looks long.
  • Ask installers what inflation and self-consumption ratio they assumed.

Why “years to payback” arguments go wrong

Optimistic export credits, ignoring fixed charges, or assuming every kWh is used at peak retail rates will understate reality. Conversely, ignoring generator fuel and downtime undervalues hybrid systems.

Figures discussed online are illustrative. Your written quote plus a bill analysis is the only number that matters for your roof.
