Hybrid vs Off-Grid for South African Homes
When hybrid solar-plus-battery is enough, and when near off-grid design is justified for SA properties.
Most urban SA homes want hybrid: stay connected to the grid, slash purchases, and island critical loads in outages. True off-grid is a different product.
Choose hybrid when…
- You still have a usable grid connection
- You want faster payback from self-consumption
- You can accept limited backup circuits or staged expansion
Consider off-grid / near off-grid when…
- Grid connection is absent, unreliable beyond typical stages, or extremely costly to upgrade
- You can fund larger storage and possibly generator support
- You are prepared for strict load management
Hybrid systems still need compliant grid reconnection behaviour and, where applicable, SSEG registration. Off-grid systems need careful earthing, generation diversity and maintenance discipline.
