Can I run a stove or oven on solar battery backup in South Africa?
Usually not on a lean essentials board. A single large plate or oven element often draws 1.5–3 kW; four-plate coincidence plus a kettle trips many 5 kW hybrids and empties small batteries fast. Prefer gas/induction planning for outages, or a large hybrid with explicit kW and kWh budgets. Daytime PV can carry cooking while the grid is up — that is a tariff win, not the same as Stage cooking.

Rand vs resilience — separate the questions
Daytime electric cooking under PV displaces 320–470 c-class imports and beats thin export credits. That is good self-use. Keeping a 2 kW oven on a 5 kWh Stage pack for two hours dumps ~4 kWh — most of a small battery — while the fridge fights for remnant SoC. Quote packs should show cooking on-grid/PV-parallel separately from cooking on backup — self-consume · costs & savings.
Why plates kill lean hybrids
Resistive elements are brutally honest about watts. Two plates at 2 kW each already match a 5 kW hybrid’s entire continuous rating before lights, ICT and fridge surge. Induction can be gentler per pot but still spikes. Ovens with fan and element compounds add up. Families learn this when Sunday roast coincides with Stage 4 — essentials vs non-essentials · inverter sizing.
Design patterns that work
- Gas hob + electric oven off backup — common urban compromise.
- Single backed-up plug for a portable induction plate — limited, explicit watt budget.
- Large hybrid (often 8–12 kW+) with 10–20 kWh usable — whole-kitchen backup only with a load study.
- Pre-cook in sun hours — slow cookers / air fryers on timers under PV.
Write the chosen pattern on the single-line diagram so the next electrician does not “helpfully” move the stove contactor onto essentials.
Tariff angle for induction upgrades
Swapping a hungry oven habit into sun-aligned air-fryer or induction sessions can cut kWh even before Stages. On Cape Town Home User upper blocks near 469 c, every avoided 2 kWh dinner is ~R9. Fixed wires charges (~R424/month) remain — cooking strategy does not zero the account — fixed charges · metro tariffs.
Commissioning tests
- Loaded test with fridge + ICT + the largest cooking load you claim is backed up.
- Family one-pager: which plates are allowed in which Stage.
- Portal SoC reserve set so dinner cannot auto-drain medical/ICT margins.
Pair with backup sizing and fridge on backup.
Owner checklist
- Stove/oven on or off essentials — binary answer on the quote.
- Measured or nameplate watts for every backed-up cooking device.
- Gas / portable induction plan documented for long slots.
- Daytime PV cooking encouraged for bill cut, not confused with Stage rights.
Induction, air fryers and slow cookers as Stage tools
A single 1.4 kW induction plate on a dedicated backed-up plug can reheat food without inviting a four-plate disaster. Air fryers (often 1.4–1.8 kW) need the same honesty: short bursts only, SoC floor respected. Slow cookers at 150–250 W can ride a fat pack for hours but still belong on a written list. None of these replace a load study for “full electric kitchen through Stage 6.”
Daytime batch cooking under PV — soups, stews, school lunches — is underrated tariff work. At ~469 c Cape upper-block rates, moving 3 kWh of cooking into sun hours saves ~R14 that day versus grid import, and beats exporting the same energy at ~153 c.
Rental and estate constraints
Some leases ban gas; some estates ban external cylinders. If electric-only cooking is mandatory, the hybrid and battery budgets must grow in the quote — not in a WhatsApp after the first cold dinner. Body corporates may also limit DB changes — get consent early — sectional title · holiday homes.
Quote language to demand
- “Cooking loads on backup: yes/no — listed devices and watts.”
- “Continuous hybrid backup kW with cooking coincidence case.”
- “Usable kWh after cooking scenario X.”
- “Gas / portable induction contingency if backup excludes stove.”
Refuse vague “the system will run your house” sentences. Pair with check a quote habits and installer red flags.
Worked Stage dinner scenarios
- A — Lean board: gas hob, fridge, ICT, lights. Electric oven off backup. Hybrid 5 kW, ~5–8 kWh usable.
- B — One induction plate: dedicated 16 A backed-up plug, hard family rule of one plate max, SoC floor 30%.
- C — Full electric kitchen: 8–12 kW hybrid class, 15 kWh+ usable, coincidence study signed off — rare in urban quotes.
Sales decks that skip A/B/C labelling produce angry WhatsApps at 18:00 on Stage 4. Put the letter on the quote cover. Daytime PV roasting (option D) remains the tariff champion: cook when the roof is alive, reheat gently later.
Insurance and lease angles: some policies care about LP gas storage; some estates ban cylinders on balconies. Resolve constraints before the hybrid arrives on site — solar insurance · sectional title.

Kids, helpers and late-night overrides
The weakest part of any cooking policy is the human who was not at the briefing. Label the backed-up plug, put a SoC floor sticker on the inverter closet, and agree that Stage dinners default to gas or cold meals when the pack is below the floor. Teenagers reheating pizza on a four-plate stove during Stage 4 will teach the maths faster than this page — preferably after you labelled the board.
Daytime PV batch cooking remains the quiet tariff win. At ~400–469 c import rates, moving dinner prep into sun hours stacks real monthly rand beside any Stage comfort you buy.
Print the owner checklist, paste your real tariff cents beside it, and refuse any quote that cannot show the same arithmetic with your bill as the input. Solar News 24 pages are education — confirm every figure on the live municipal or Eskom PDF and on the installer datasheet before you pay a deposit. When in doubt, prioritise daytime self-use against retail rates, then Stage essentials hours, then export credits.

If two quotes disagree on cooking backup, ask each for a coincidence table: stove watts + fridge surge + kettle. The quote that refuses the table is the riskier deposit. Keep gas bottle maintenance current even when the hybrid is new — Stage policies fail open when cylinders are empty.
Induction vs resistance on backup
Induction hobs draw sharp loads; many hybrids keep cooking off essentials for a reason. If you insist, engineer diversity (no oven + hob + kettle together) and size continuous kW honestly — or cook before Stage and use gas/microwave fallbacks — induction on backup · essentials.
Quick questions
Can I run a microwave on backup?
Often yes on a 5 kW-class hybrid if coincidence loads are low — microwaves are short bursts. Still verify surge and write it on the essentials list.
Is gas safer for Stage cooking?
Many homes keep a gas hob for outages. Follow LP gas safe-use rules; solar does not replace gas compliance.
