Do municipalities pay for solar feed-in in South Africa?
Some municipalities and Eskom SSEG programmes credit exported energy, but rates, caps and application rules differ by distributor — and credits are often modest versus retail tariffs. Design primarily for self-consumption and backup; treat feed-in as a bonus, not the business case.
- Ask your metro’s latest SSEG tariff schedule (Cape Town, Joburg, Tshwane, eThekwini, etc. publish updates).
- Export may require an bi-directional / approved meter.
- There is still no magic national “solar tax” for registering — see tariff mythbuster.
Illustrative only — confirm with your distributor before you bank on export income.
