EV charging

Do I need an RCD Type B for a home EV charger in South Africa?

Many fixed Mode 3 wallboxes require DC-fault protection that a Type B RCD (or an OEM-integrated equivalent meeting the installer’s wiring rules) is meant to provide — a bog-standard Type AC alone is often not enough. Follow the charger OEM’s installation manual and the electrician’s CoC; do not improvise with random DIN devices.

Answer first: Open the wallbox manual to the protection section. Note whether the unit includes 6 mA DC detection internally or demands an upstream Type B (or listed Type A-EV) device. Then have a registered person design the circuit — wiring / CoC · home charger cost · DIY risks · what is a CoC.

Why EV circuits are picky

Smooth DC fault currents from vehicle/charger electronics can blind some AC-only RCDs. That is a shock-protection problem, not a “nice to have.” Related: earthing · SPDs · isolation habits.

Hybrid / solar interaction

Protection devices sit on the AC path. Export limits, CT clamps and backup boards are separate topics — do not let a partner “save money” by sharing a random house RCD with the wallbox — CT clamps · EV from solar · three-phase.

Red flags

  • Portable Mode 2 left on a shared socket as a “permanent” home solution.
  • No CoC offer for a fixed wallbox.
  • Unknown RCD type “we always use.”

Homeowner folder to keep with the CoC

Field notes from SA handovers

At commissioning, ask the partner to demonstrate the behaviour described on this page, photograph settings, and confirm NRS-listed SKUs match the invoice. Refuse non-listed gear and export promises that ignore your metro’s live PDF — red flags · NRS list · SSEG · read a quote.

Type AC vs A vs B vs integral detection — plain language

Type AC devices look for classic AC residual currents. Type A adds pulsating DC. EVSE fault currents can include smooth DC that blinds AC-only devices — hence OEM calls for Type B, Type A-EV, or chargers with integral 6 mA DC detection plus a compatible upstream device. The manual wins over forum folklore — wiring / CoC · CoC explained · earthing.

Worked quote interrogation

  1. Open the PDF install guide for the exact wallbox SKU on the quote.
  2. Highlight the protection clause; paste it into the email thread.
  3. Ask which DIN device (brand/model) or integral function satisfies it.
  4. Ask how selectivity with the main DB RCD is handled so one fault does not black out the house.

Solar hybrids and shared boards

Hybrids already have their own AC protection story. Bolting an EV circuit onto a random existing earth-leakage device “to save a DIN slot” is how nuisance trips and failed CoCs happen. Budget a dedicated way — DB upgrade? · DB cost · EV from solar · CT clamps.

Three-phase and load management

Three-phase wallboxes and load-management CTs do not remove the RCD-type requirement; they add metering and phase-balance duties — three-phase EV · phase imbalance · load management · NMD.

Portable chargers are not a loophole

Leaving a Mode 2 portable on a shared socket overnight is not “compliance by omission.” Fixed wallboxes need proper protection; portables remain travel kits — wallbox vs portable · DIY risks · EV insurance.

Inspector and insurer expectations

Municipal inspectors and private CoC practitioners look for protection that matches the OEM sheet. Insurers ask whether the fixed charger was installed by a registered person. Keep the wallbox manual page, DIN device invoice and test results with the CoC — inspector tips · inspection fails · EV insurance · home solar insurance.

If a partner substitutes a cheaper RCD type “because stock,” pause. Substitutions need OEM-written acceptance, not verbal confidence — red flags · DIY risks · EV guide.

Decision checklist before the deposit

  1. Same one-page brief to every partner: 12 months of kWh or tokens, tariff code, roof/site photos, Stage essentials list.
  2. Two matched quotes with Incl. VAT grand totals and named SKUs.
  3. Export-limit and meter plan written while SSEG queues.
  4. CoC, dual-supply labels and OEM warranty registration named as deliverables.
  5. Refuse non-listed gear and export promises that ignore your metro PDF.

After commissioning — thirty-day habit

For the first month, skim the hybrid app every few days: self-use share, unexpected grid import on sunny afternoons, battery SoC floors before evening Stage, and any fault counts. Photograph settings after the first firmware touch. Keep metro statements beside the monitoring export so “savings” stories stay honest when fixed charges move — monitoring · bill still high · monthly savings · SoC settings · Stage strategy · selling with solar · warranty transfer · insurance.

Practical SA homeowner notes

Write the open questions from this page onto the site-survey form before anyone quotes. South African installs fail more often on missing paperwork, wrong board placement and ignored metro rules than on brand slogans. Keep Incl. VAT totals, NRS-listed SKUs, export-limit screenshots and CoC deliverables in one folder with serial photos. If a partner cannot show those artefacts at handover, pause the final payment until they can — that discipline protects Stage cover, insurance claims and resale far better than a glossy brochure.

Revisit the live metro tariff PDF and OEM warranty sheet whenever you expand panels, add a wallbox or change prepaid status. Numbers on this desk are illustrative snapshots dated around 27 October 2026; your erf’s fixed charges, feed-in cents and inspection queue are the figures that decide the rand outcome. When in doubt, send the same one-page brief to two installers and compare their annexures line by line rather than their homepage claims.

  • Photograph settings after every service visit or firmware change.
  • Log Stage SoC floors for two weeks before changing reserve knobs.
  • Confirm dual-supply labels still match the as-built single-line.
  • Update the insurer schedule when hardware or capacity changes.
  • Store monitoring passwords with the conveyancing pack for a future sale.

Quick questions

Is Type A enough?

Only if the OEM explicitly allows that topology with its integral DC detection — read the manual, do not guess.

Can I DIY the RCD swap?

Fixed EV circuits belong with a registered person and a CoC — DIY is how insurance arguments start.

Does solar change the RCD rule?

Solar adds its own AC/DC protection needs; the wallbox still needs its specified EV protection.
