Why is my hybrid inverter fan so loud at night in South Africa?
Night fan noise usually means the hybrid is charging from grid/TOU, discharging into evening loads, sitting in a hot plant room, or stuck in a high-temp derate — not a "haunted" inverter. Highveld altitude and poorly ventilated cupboards make it worse. Fix placement, SoC schedules and load timing before assuming a DOA unit.

Answer first: Check whether the fan spikes when grid-charging, when the kettle hits, or all night at idle. Note ambient temperature at the unit. Cross-check with noise placement · SoC settings · cabinet ventilation · Highveld derate.
Noise buckets
| Pattern | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Fan every evening 18:00–21:00 | Discharge into cooking loads |
| Fan after midnight on TOU | Grid charge window — TOU |
| Fan all night at low load | Hot cupboard / blocked vents / high ambient |
| Sudden new rattle | Bearing / debris — call OEM path |
Placement fixes that actually work
- Move out of bedrooms and shared walls where OEM allows.
- Keep clearances; never enclose in a sealed broom cupboard.
- Add quiet ventilation, not a towel over the vents.
- Isolate vibration with OEM-approved mounts.
Estate rules may limit balcony placement — estate / HOA · sectional title.
Schedule tweaks
If TOU grid-charge is the culprit, shrink the charge window or lower target SoC so the fan is not screaming at 02:00 for a Stage that never comes — Stage strategy · battery without solar TOU.
When to call
- Grinding or metal-on-metal sounds.
- Fan at 100% with cool ambient and tiny loads.
- Thermal alarms paired with power derate.

Homeowner folder to keep with the CoC
Store the quote annexures, OEM manuals, serial photos, export-limit screenshots and metro reference letters together. When a future technician or buyer inherits the plant, that folder beats scattered WhatsApps — choose installer · selling with solar · warranty transfer.

Field notes from SA handovers
At commissioning, ask the partner to demonstrate the behaviour described on this page, photograph settings, and confirm NRS-listed SKUs match the invoice. Refuse non-listed gear and export promises that ignore your metro’s live PDF — red flags · NRS list · SSEG · read a quote.
Heat, altitude and cupboards
Hybrid inverters shed heat through fans. A sealed broom cupboard on the Highveld after a 35 °C day keeps the heatsink hot into the night, so the fan never rests even at tiny loads. OEM clearances exist for a reason; towels and cardboard "to quiet it" make thermal derate and warranty arguments worse — ventilation · Highveld derate · placement.
TOU grid-charge is a common 02:00 culprit
Cape Town and other TOU tariffs push cheap overnight charging. The hybrid then runs fans while pulling grid kW into the battery. If Stages are mild that week, you may be paying noise (and some import) for insurance you do not need every night. Tune charge windows and target SoC to the actual Stage outlook — TOU · SoC settings · battery-only TOU · Stage strategy.
Evening discharge noise vs fault noise
Cooking loads on backup between 18:00 and 21:00 make fans loud for boring reasons. A new grinding rattle, or 100% fan with cool ambient and a 100 W load, is different — open an OEM support ticket with audio and ambient temperature notes. Firmware sometimes changes fan curves; only update via supported paths — firmware · replacement cost · NRS list.
Estate and sectional-title politics
Balcony and stairwell placements that pass OEM clearances can still fail neighbour and conduct-rule tests. Document measured dB if disputes escalate; moving the plant is cheaper than a body-corporate war — estate / HOA · sectional title · choose installer.
Quick homeowner checklist tonight
- Feel airflow at vents — blocked?
- Note whether fan tracks kettle/microwave or runs at idle.
- Check app for grid-charge or high battery temperature.
- Photograph the plant-room layout for the installer.

Battery cabinets amplify sound
Metal cabinets and tile floors reflect fan noise into bedrooms through shared walls. Rubber OEM feet, clearing resonance panels, and moving the plant off a hollow cupboard help more than "silent mode" myths. If the battery BMS also runs fans, treat the room as a small plant room — indoor vs outdoor · ventilation · parallel expansion.
When replacement is the honest answer
Chronic bearing noise after years of Highveld dust may not be fixable with schedules. Price a replacement path with NRS-listed SKUs and downtime planning — replacement cost · NRS list · hybrid brands.
Rand and paperwork discipline
Keep invoices, CoC, SSEG references, export-limit screenshots and tariff codes in one folder. When the next technician, buyer or insurer asks what was commissioned, that pack beats a WhatsApp scroll — choose installer · selling with solar · warranty transfer · read a quote.

Commissioning demo worth insisting on
Before final payment, ask the partner to demonstrate the behaviour this page describes: which breaker moves, which schedule runs, which meter SKU applies, or which isolator locks out. Photograph the proof into the handover folder with the CoC. A demo that cannot be shown usually cannot be supported later — choose installer · red flags · CoC · NRS list.
Where this page sits in the desk
Use this answer for the narrow decision, then jump to hubs for the wider plan: load shedding for Stage sizing, costs & savings for bill maths, batteries for usable kWh, panels & inverters for hardware, and check a quote before you pay a deposit. Tariff context stays on metro tariffs and 2026/27 tariffs.
Maintenance rhythm after month one
Revisit settings after the first full billing cycle and after the first serious Stage week. Export a monitoring CSV, compare to the metro bill, and note any nuisance trips or fan behaviour. One-page brief to send installers

Education only: confirm isolator ratings, meter SKUs, lease clauses and fan-curve firmware notes on the live OEM/metro/primary documents the week you act — ranges here are illustrative for SA homeowners comparing quotes.
Neighbour and estate diplomacy
If the plant room shares a wall with a bedroom next door, document dB expectations before install — moving the hybrid later costs more than a better wall and mounts now — estate / HOA · sectional title · placement.
TOU charge window experiment
Shift a 02:00–05:00 grid-charge window earlier or later by one hour and log fan complaints for a week. Many "broken fan" tickets are just aggressive TOU schedules — Cape Town TOU · SoC settings.
Night fan noise means heat or a settings problem
Hybrid inverters spin fans when power electronics run warm or when the unit is hard at work on battery discharge. A bedroom wall mount that screams at 01:00 is a placement error. Move noisy units to a garage / plant room with airflow, or choose a quieter model before install — not after the family complains.
Dust-clogged filters raise fan speed. Clean on the schedule in the manual. If fans run flat-out at low load, call the installer to check derating, firmware, and ambient temperature — do not tape over vents.
Measure sound at the bedroom wall with a phone meter app before accepting handover. If it exceeds what the household will sleep through, move the unit while scaffolding is still up.
Quick questions
Is night fan noise always a fault?
No — charge/discharge and heat often explain it; still verify placement and schedules.
Can I switch the fan off?
No — overheating kills hybrids; fix heat and schedules instead.
Will a firmware update help?
Sometimes fan curves change — only via OEM-supported paths.
