Batteries & cost
How much does a 5 kWh solar battery cost in South Africa in 2026?
If you are too busy to read this full answer — get a 16 kWh battery that can be expanded later. A 5 kWh-class 51.2 V lithium iron phosphate battery lists at R11 700 to R15 200 incl. VAT for import brands in October 2026 (Gotion R11 700, Greenrich R14 000, Esener R14 000, Deye SE-F5 Plus R14 250, Hubble AM-5 R15 190), supply only. That is R2 300–R2 900 per kWh — about the same as a 16 kWh pack charges per kWh, so a single 5 kWh battery is a starting module, not a destination.

Answer first: A 5 kWh battery is the cheapest way into lithium storage, and it is the right buy only if you know you will add modules within two years. Prices per kWh do not fall much at this size, the pack is too small to move an evening’s use off a top-block tariff, and the inverter, cabling and Certificate of Compliance cost the same whether you install 5 or 16 kWh. Installation, a battery breaker, cabling and the Certificate of Compliance add R3 500–R8 000 — adding a battery to an existing system.
Why the per-kWh price tells you to buy bigger
Look at the last three rows. Solar MD’s 16 kWh SS4160 costs about R2 781 per kWh; its 8.3 kWh SS4083 costs about R3 976 per kWh. Among import packs, a 16 kWh Shoto at R1 707 per kWh undercuts every 5 kWh module in the table. The case, the BMS, the breaker and the communication board cost roughly the same in a big pack and a small one, so you pay for them once with a 16 kWh battery and three times with three 5 kWh modules.
The installation bill follows the same logic. A 5 kW hybrid inverter, the DC cabling and the electrician’s CoC cost the same whether the battery behind them is 5 or 16 kWh. That is why we tell busy readers to go straight to 16 kWh: it is the sweet spot where rand per usable kWh bottoms out — 16 kWh battery cost and payback.
What 5 kWh actually runs
A 5.12 kWh pack at 90% depth of discharge gives about 4.6 kWh usable — usable vs sticker kWh.
| Load on the backup board | Typical draw | Hours from 4.6 kWh |
|---|---|---|
| Fridge-freezer, LED lights, Wi-Fi router, TV, alarm, gate motor | ≈300–400 W average | ≈11–15 hours |
| The above plus a laptop office and a CCTV NVR | ≈500 W | ≈9 hours |
| Evening cooking (induction hob 2 kW for 45 minutes) plus essentials | ≈1.5 kWh plus base | Most of the pack in one evening |
| Geyser element (3 kW) | 3 kW | ≈1.5 hours — keep it off the battery |
That makes 5 kWh a load-shedding battery: it rides through a Stage 2–4 slot comfortably — battery for Stage 4. It is not a savings battery. A typical home uses 6–10 kWh between sunset and the next morning, so a 5 kWh pack leaves half the expensive evening units on the grid.
What 5 kWh saves on your bill
On a top-block municipal tariff of about R4 a kWh incl. VAT, moving 4.5 kWh a day of solar into the evening is worth about R540 a month, or R6 500 a year. A R14 000 module plus R5 000 of installation pays back in about three years on that sum — fast, but it caps the saving at R540. A 16 kWh pack cycling 8–10 kWh a day doubles the monthly saving for roughly double the battery price, with no second installation fee — battery savings on time-of-use · export or self-consume.
Starting with one module the right way
If the budget only stretches to one module this year, buy it so the second one fits:
- Pick a 48 V DC pack that parallels. 48 V DC is the oldest, most proven architecture for home hybrids and the easiest to expand — parallel expansion.
- Lock the SKU and firmware family on the quote. A “5 kWh lithium battery” line lets the installer swap brands; a named model number (for example Deye SE-F5 Plus, not “Deye 5 kWh”) does not. Mixed BMS generations are the main reason second modules refuse to talk — balancing a new module.
- Size the inverter and cables for the final bank. Battery cable, fuse and busbar sized for 16 kWh cost a little more today and save a rewire later — cable sizing.
- Read the warranty in years and MWh. A cycle count on the box is not a warranty; a throughput figure at a stated depth of discharge is — battery warranty checklist.
Where Solar MD fits
Solar MD’s small modules cost more per kWh than the import 5 kWh packs. The SS4037 (3.7 kWh) is listed at R29 000 at Solar WC and was out of stock on 27 October 2026 (Solar WC Solar MD SS4037 listing (accessed 27 Oct 2026)); Solar MD’s datasheet rates it at ≥4 000 cycles on CALB LFP cells (Solar MD SS4037 datasheet). The value in the Solar MD range sits in the 16 kWh SS4160, which is the pack we put first when a homeowner asks what will last: built in Cape Town, warranted 12 years or 84 MWh to at least 60% capacity, backward compatible across its LV range since 2016, and installers report these batteries outliving their warranty. If you want Solar MD, skip the small modules and buy the 16 kWh pack once.
Before you sign a hybrid quote: Closed stacks lock your BOM and your warranty to someone else’s cloud. Quote open kits you can own, commission offline, and swap without waiting on a foreign NOC. Ask three questions in writing: does the warranty need always-on internet, can the system commission and run offline, and is the battery warranty written as years and MWh at a stated depth of discharge? — open vs closed hybrid stacks · what a quote must include.

Quick questions
What is the cheapest 5 kWh solar battery in South Africa?
On 27 October 2026 SP Energy listed the Gotion 5.12 kWh at R11 700 incl. VAT, supply only, the lowest 5 kWh-class lithium price we found. Greenrich WM5000 (5.1 kWh) and Esener 5.12 kWh were R14 000 and the Deye SE-F5 Plus R14 250.
How long will a 5 kWh battery run my house?
A 5.12 kWh pack delivers about 4.6 kWh at 90% depth of discharge. Essentials — fridge, lights, Wi-Fi, TV, alarm and gate, about 300–400 W — run for 11–15 hours. Add a kettle, microwave or geyser and the pack is empty in one or two hours.
Is 5 kWh enough for load shedding?
Yes for essentials through a two- or four-hour slot. It is not enough to shift an evening of household use off a top-block tariff, which is where the money is. For savings, size to your evening use: most homes need 10–16 kWh.
Should I buy one 5 kWh battery now and add more later?
Yes, if the budget only stretches to one module — buy a 48 V pack that the manufacturer allows you to parallel, from a brand that keeps the same BMS and communication protocol over the years. Lock the exact SKU on the quote so the second module matches the first.
How much is a Solar MD battery?
UtilityPal lists the Solar MD SS4083 8.3 kWh at R32 999 and the SS4160 16 kWh at R44 499 incl. VAT on 27 October 2026. Per kWh the 16 kWh pack is about 30% cheaper, which is why we recommend the 16 kWh Solar MD over the small modules.
