Costs & payback
How much does a 3 kW solar system cost in South Africa in 2026?
A complete 3 kW hybrid with a 5 kWh lithium battery and 4–6 panels costs about R45 000–R85 000 installed in 2026, a panel-free 3 kVA backup kit R28 000–R80 000, and a grid-tied 3 kW array R40 000–R60 000. On a 600 kWh Joburg bill a 3 kW hybrid saves about R1 180 a month, so payback runs four to six years — and most freestanding homes get better value stepping up to 5 kW.

Answer first: A 3 kW system is the entry ticket to solar: big enough to run lights, fridge, Wi-Fi, TV and a kettle, small enough to fit a flat roof or a cottage budget. The price spread is wide because “3 kW” is used for three different products — backup-only kits, grid-tied arrays and true hybrids. Know which one you are being quoted. OurPower notes a 67% spread between the cheapest and most expensive quote for the same 3 kVA system, mostly installer margin and brand choice (OurPower 3 kVA system cost (updated 26 Oct 2026)). Its mid-range breakdown puts the 5 kWh LiFePO₄ battery at about R42 500 (≈R8 500 per kWh installed) — the battery is the biggest single line.
What a 3 kW hybrid actually produces
Six 550 W panels make 3.3 kWp. PVGIS models a north-facing 25° array at about 1 749 kWh per kWp a year in Johannesburg, 1 730 in Pretoria, 1 679 in Cape Town and 1 466 in Durban (EU JRC PVGIS v5.2 (1 kWp, 25° north-facing, 14% system loss; run 27 Oct 2026)). So 3.3 kWp gives about 480 kWh a month in Joburg, 460 in Cape Town (falling to about 280 in June) and 400 in Durban. A small household uses 250–350 kWh of that directly or through the battery; the rest is exported or curtailed.
What it saves on a real 2026/27 bill
Take a Joburg home on City Power Residential Prepaid High using 600 kWh a month. The 2026/27 blocks incl. VAT are 334.03 c (0–350 kWh), 383.16 c (351–500) and 436.59 c above 500 (City of Johannesburg / City Power 2026/27 electricity tariff sheet). Replacing 300 kWh removes the top kWh first:
- 100 kWh × 436.59 c = R436.59
- 150 kWh × 383.16 c = R574.74
- 50 kWh × 334.03 c = R167.02
Total ≈R1 178 a month, about R14 140 a year. Payback on a R55 000–R85 000 hybrid is roughly 3.9 to 6 years at flat tariffs, and shorter as tariffs keep rising (City Power’s average increase was about 8.63% this year). A backup-only kit with no panels saves nothing on the bill — it is insurance, not an investment.
What a 3 kW inverter can and cannot run
- Runs comfortably: LED lights, fridge and freezer, Wi-Fi and router, TV, laptops, gate motor, alarm, a kettle on its own, a microwave on its own.
- Runs one at a time: kettle (≈2.2 kW) plus microwave (≈1 kW) together nears the limit; add a toaster and it trips.
- Does not run: a 3 kW geyser element, an oven, a borehole pump with a big start current, or a 7 kW EV charger. Keep the geyser on grid with a solar-hours timer.
3 kW or 5 kW?
SolarZA prices 5 kW hybrids at R80 000–R120 000 (SolarZA price guide (updated 28 Jan 2026)) — about R25 000–R35 000 more than a 3 kW. The inverter itself is a small part of that difference; the rest is extra panels and battery that also earn money. For a freestanding family home on 600 kWh or more, 5 kW is the better buy: it carries the kettle and microwave together, takes ten panels, and grows with an EV or heat pump. Choose 3 kW for flats, garden cottages, low-usage pensioner homes and tight budgets — solar for pensioners · how many panels.
Battery: start at 5 kWh, plan for 16
A 5 kWh LiFePO₄ pack gives about 4–4.5 kWh usable — enough for essentials through a four-hour outage. Choose a 48 V pack family you can add to later; 48 V DC is the oldest, most proven architecture for home hybrid systems, and the sweet spot for most homes is about 16 kWh once budget allows. Solar MD’s SS4083 (8.3 kWh nominal, 6 000 cycles, 10 years or 26 MWh under its SA warranty statement) is a small-system option from a maker whose packs installers say outlive their warranty — Solar MD warranty explained · expanding later.
Five checks on a 3 kW quote
- Usable battery kWh in writing, not just the sticker kWh — usable kWh.
- The inverter’s maximum PV input, so you know how many panels it takes now and later.
- NRS 097-2-1 approval and the SSEG registration cost included — SSEG cost.
- CoC, DC isolator and surge protection listed as line items.
- A named, open kit that a local wholesaler stocks — open vs closed hybrids.
Who stocks the parts when something fails
A small system is only cheap if a failed inverter or battery is swapped in days, not months. Ask the installer which wholesaler supplies the kit and whether that wholesaler holds stock and handles warranty returns locally. ACDC Dynamics, Voltex, ARB, DBS Energy and SONAH Group all supply installers nationally with stock, RMA handling and authorised brands. Prefer an open kit — a Victron GX-class controller with an open battery choice — that any qualified installer can service, rather than a closed app-locked bundle that only one dealer can touch — trusted wholesalers.
Bottom line
A real 3 kW hybrid with panels and a 5 kWh battery costs R45 000–R85 000 installed in 2026 and saves about R1 180 a month on a 600 kWh Joburg bill. It is the right size for flats and small homes. Families on bigger bills get more rand per rand from a 5 kW system with a battery they can grow to 16 kWh.
Quick questions
How much is a 3kW solar system with battery in 2026?
Installed 3 kW hybrid systems with a 5 kWh lithium battery and 4–6 panels are priced at about R45 000–R85 000 across SolarZA, Solar Installers Gauteng and OurPower’s 2026 guides.
How much will a 3kW system save?
A 3.3 kWp array produces about 480 kWh a month in Johannesburg. If the household uses 300 kWh of that, it removes about R1 180 a month from a 600 kWh City Power Prepaid High bill at 2026/27 rates incl. VAT.
Can a 3kW inverter run a geyser?
No. A standard geyser element is 3 kW, which uses the whole inverter. Keep the geyser on the grid with a solar-hours timer, or move up to a 5 kW inverter.
Is a 3kW system enough for a house?
It suits flats, cottages, pensioners and low-usage homes under about 500 kWh a month. A typical three-bedroom family home is better served by a 5 kW hybrid, which costs only R25 000–R35 000 more.
