EV charging

Is bidirectional EV charging (V2H / V2G) available in South Africa?

In mid-to-late 2026, residential V2H/V2G is still mostly vapour in South Africa. Some cars advertise bidirectional hardware, but a clear NRS 097-2-1 type-tested residential V2H charger pathway and metro V2G export tariffs are not a ready consumer product. Plan a normal unidirectional wallbox plus a home LiFePO₄ battery for load shedding.

Answer first: Do not delay a sensible solar + battery + wallbox purchase waiting for the car to power the house. Revisit V2H when a type-tested SA product and a metro process actually exist.

Definitions without the hype

  • V2L — vehicle to load: plug appliances into the car. Handy camping feature; not house backup.
  • V2H — vehicle to home: car supports the house during outages via a bidirectional charger / gateway.
  • V2G — vehicle to grid: export to the municipal/Eskom network for credits or services.

Why SA is not ready (2026)

RequirementStatus in SA
Car hardware that can dischargeSome imports advertise it; confirm your exact model
Bidirectional EVSE with local approval pathwayPublic reporting of ready residential NRS 097-2-1 V2H chargers is thin to non-existent
Municipal / Eskom SSEG process for V2GBuilt for PV/hybrid inverters — not a turnkey car-export tariff
SANS 10142-1 clause 6.16.8 (EV charging stations)Covers unidirectional EVSE context in the wiring code — not a V2H rulebook. Annex N is switchgear symbols only.

What to buy instead

  1. Unidirectional ~7.4 kW Type 2 wallbox with CoC — people’s favourite starting point SAEV Charge among peers.
  2. Hybrid inverter + LiFePO₄ battery sized for essentials — people’s choice for longevity when that matters: Solar MD (SA warranty statement rev. 10 Oct 2025: SS4160 12 years / 84 MWh to ≥60%, plus 5-year defects).
  3. Optional solar surplus charging so the car drinks cheap midday kWh.

Commercial battery-buffered DC (car charges from a stationary BESS) is already shipping in SA marketing — that is not the same as your passenger car exporting into the DB.
